The focus of this publication is to integrate knowledge from the disciplines of human factors engineering (HFE) and I&C to emphasize an interdisciplinary approach for the design of better HSIs and consequently improved human performance in nuclear power plants.
This publication was developed from the exchange of information, experiences and practices by participating Member States at the IAEA Technical Meeting on the Safety and Security Interface - Approaches and National Experiences, held in Vienna in 2018.
Draws on data and results collated during an IAEA coordinated research project on optimizing soil, water and nutrient use efficiency in integrated cropping-livestock production systems. The main objective was to enhance food security, improve soil fertility, and mitigate greenhouse gases from agriculture using integrated cropping-livestock systems.
Presents the material properties of all unirradiated Uranium-Molybdenum (U-Mo) fuel constituents that are essential for fuel designers and reactor operators to evaluate the fuel's performance and safety for research reactors.
This publication is the outcome of two technical meetings and compiles the results and conclusions in terms of benefits to be obtained from the use of high assay low enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel, with due consideration of safety issues that arise from its use.
Analyses and provides new insights into the different approaches followed by the nuclear industry for the effective management of nuclear facilities, as well as guidance to develop a comprehensive requirement management programme in nuclear facilities.
Provides an introduction to gamma computed tomography for non-destructive evaluation imaging in the simplest configuration. The guide is intended to be of use to the non-destructive testing community, currently practicing conventional radiography techniques.
Presents the findings of an IAEA Coordinated Research Project on the development and application of the integrated climate, land, energy and water framework. Together with other UN partners, the IAEA has developed this framework in response to global challenges such as ensuring universal access to food, energy and water.
Provides practical guidance for implementing the safety requirements specified in IAEA Safety Standards Series No. GSR Part 3, Radiation Protection and Safety of Radiation Sources: International Basic Safety Standards, related to the use of nuclear gauges
Presents detailed concepts and procedures for the preparation, conduct and evaluation of exercises to test relevant nuclear security systems and measures, and provides useful templates and checklists that can be used to assist the exercise development process.
Addresses the most current needs and offers guidance on clinical practice, radiation safety and patient protection, human resource development and training required for the overall practice of nuclear medicine.
The International Conference on Research Reactors, held every four years, is one of the IAEA activities supporting countries in addressing the opportunities and challenges related to research reactor programmes. This publication presents a summary and other material from the 2019 conference.
Focuses on the engineering judgement necessary to apply each of the design requirements in SSR-2/1 (Rev. 1), and also the entire set of requirements, to light water cooled and high temperature gas cooled SMRs.
Analyses uranium supply/demand scenarios and discusses new developments in uranium geology, exploration, mining, milling and processing, as well as environmental requirements for uranium operations and site decommissioning.
Presents the main findings and developments discussed during the International Symposium on Trends in Radiopharmaceuticals. Key issues and advances in the field of radiopharmaceuticals from development, production, and use of diagnostic, therapeutic, and theranostic radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals are covered.
Provides a summary of the operating experience feedback from the events reported to the Fuel Incident Notification and Analysis System since it was launched in 1992. The publication has a focus on the root causes, lessons identified, and corrective actions taken to prevent the occurrence of similar events.
Provides current information on considerations about environmental impact assessments (EIAs) related to small modular reactors. Under many regulatory regimes, the EIA report is a prerequisite for licensing and an important tool to confirm that the potential site is suitable for the future construction and operation of a reactor.
Presents a collection of current practices of fuel acceptance criteria used in States with operating pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs) and provides the technical justification available for such criteria conditions.
Provides information and guidance on the establishment of a process for periodic safety review for research reactors, including preparation, conduct of the review and reporting of results. In addition, the publication covers the regulatory assessment of these results.
Reproduces the explanatory texts on the nuclear liability instruments adopted under the IAEA's auspices in 1997. Finalized by the International Expert Group on Nuclear Liability (INLEX), these texts constitute a comprehensive study and authoritative interpretation of the IAEA's nuclear liability regime.
The Gate to Africa exercise programme on transport security is an implementation of the Joint Action Plan. This publication summarizes the Gate to Africa exercise programme and describes the scenarios utilized. It also lists the lessons learned and findings from the exercises.
New geochemical and mineralogical data from research conducted under an IAEA coordinated research project has resulted in a better understanding of the genesis of uranium and thorium mineralization. This publication presents a summary of the research and selected papers from the project's partners.
Presents a harmonized approach that may be used to structure the owner/operator management system and establish and manage nuclear projects and their development activities irrespective of the adopted approach.
Describes several available techniques with sealed radioactive sources, by showing examples of their use in industrial applications and by demonstrating how they can be used to improve process efficiency and to save money. The focus is on two major techniques with sealed radioactive sources: gamma scanning and neutron backscattering.
Provides Member States with guidance on how to develop cost estimates for a disposal programme and on how to establish funding mechanisms. It will help readers in becoming informed clients by familiarizing themselves with the approaches and complexities in cost estimates and funding mechanisms for disposal.
Covers energy and climate change policies, implications for the power sector, environmental perspectives, and potential roles of existing, evolutionary and innovative nuclear power systems, including the integration of nuclear/renewable energy systems.
Supports Member States in developing arrangements for communicating with the public and media and coordinating official information in the response to a nuclear or radiological emergency. These arrangements facilitate the successful implementation of protective actions and the delivery of consistent messages.
Computer security is increasingly recognized as a key component in nuclear security. This publication outlines a methodology for conducting computer security assessments at nuclear facilities. The methodology can likewise be easily adapted to provide assessments at facilities with other radioactive materials.
This publication is a revision and combination of two Safety Guides, IAEA Safety Standards Series No. NS-G-1.1 and No. NS-G-1.3. The revision takes into account developments in instrumentation and control (I&C) systems since the publication of the earlier Safety Guides.
