For all those rockers who want to remember the 'good old days' welcome to Monsters Of Rock. The definitive book of the history of Monsters of Rock at Donington Park, told through hundreds of interviews with the bands, includes over 400 artists. This book was the first half of a previously released book by me 'From Donington To Download' - but many people have come up to me and said 'I'm old school, so I was only interested in the first half of the book, so here it is as a 'stand alone' release. In 2005 I started to write the book of the Donington & Download Festival (including Monsters Of Rock at Milton Keynes). I was coming to the end of completing the Official Book of the Reading Festival and saw Donington as the second release in my 'Festival Series' of books, covering my favourite festivals that I attend every year - Monsters Of Rock was the longest running Classic Rock and Metal Festival in the UK. I have travelled the length and breadth of England interviewing bands and artists for the book and have had some great times in amongst the hard work. I've also had many phone interviews from Metallica to Alice Cooper to Queensrÿche and also what was possibly one of the legend Ronnie James Dio's last interviews, prior to cancelling his final UK tour. The book contains many 'classic rock' bands including such legends as Rainbow, Judas Priest, Saxon, Mötörhead, Gillan, Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple, Ted Nugent, Twisted Sister, Whitesnake, Accept, Ratt, Y&T, Magnum, Thunder, The Quireboys, The Almighty, Therapy?, KISS, Def Leppard, Anvil, Rose Tattoo, Metallica, White Zombie and literally hundreds and hundreds more....... I was given unprecented access to the festival and the artists at the events thanks to the very friendly and accomodating organisers, they were second to none during the process of writing this book and I can never praise or thank them enough.

It had everything - a large concert hall, an amazing complex and set in a location on a sandy beach just outside of St Austell; The Cornwall Coliseum was the 'South West's Premier Entertainment Complex' and was a major attraction. All the BIG artists played there, including - Paul McCartney, The Who, KISS, Black Sabbath, Genesis, The Clash, Black Sabbath, Duran Duran, Bon Jovi, Japan, Iron Maide, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Johnny Cash, Billy Connolly, Magnum, Thin Lizzy, Madness, The Specials and hundreds and hundreds more. So let's go on a journey from the begining to the end, starting in the 1960's and ending with the demolition sadly this year.... WELCOME TO CORNWALL COLISEUM!!!

For me Rock Music was where it was 'at'. I grew up in Plymouth (in the UK) listening to KISS, Rainbow, Magnum, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Queen, Saxon, Judas Priest, Motörhead and the like - usually on a large 'ghetto blaster' in our local park or at our nearest railway station. And then it all changed when my friend bought the first album by a new American band and that band was Metallica. Neither of us had heard anything like it before, nor had most of the World... The music had the pure raw energy and speed of punk, added to the grinding riffs of heavy metal. The songs were unlike anything before and it wasn't long until the music was referred to in Kerrang! and Sounds as 'Thrash Metal' and Metallica were the leaders of the new movement, head and shoulders above the rest. It was a few later before I saw them live at Donington Monsters of Rock Festival in 1985, where they were squeezed onto a line-up between the classic British Prog Rock of Magnum and LA's new 'Bad Boys' Ratt. I didn't pay that much attention to them at the time, as I was otherwise occupied on a sunny day in the Midlands... A year later though, having listened to both 'Ride the Lightning' and 'Master of Puppets' I headed to London to see them at Hammersmith Odeon (as it was at the time) on their final UK date of the 'Damage Inc.' tour with Cliff Burton, who was killed in a coach accident in Sweden five days later. It was after catching them at this show that my love of the band grew. I saw all the other members of the 'Big Four' - Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth and many more thrash bands including Exodus, Flotsam and Jetsam, Kreator, Overkill, Testament, Metal Church - but none could match the talent and excitement of a new Metallica album or show. I have had the pleasure of seeing Metallica at Donington five times (both Monsters of Rock and Download Festivlas), four times at Reading Festival, two of their appearances at Sonisphere in the UK, the afore mentioned Hammersmith Odeon show and once at Wembley Stadium, the home of football and they never fail to entertain - if anything, the last time I saw them at Reading was probably one of the best times I've seen them. So now we come to this book, covering my thoughts on one of the greatest bands ever, along with the thoughts, memories and recollections from Metallica fans from all over the world!!! We're off to never-never land...
