Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Didactics - English - Literature, Works, grade: 2,3, University of Hannover (Englisches Seminar), course: Lower ¿ Middle ¿ Upper: Identifying and Discussing Class, language: English, abstract: The high class-consciousness of Victorian England is very prominent in Hardy's short story, so that the aim of this paper is to show that "For Conscience' Sake" breaks with the conventions of the Victorian literary marketplace in order to depict the consequences of a relationship or marriage between people from different classes induced by a very class-conscious society, and that these consequences not only affect the female part of the couple.In order to prove this thesis statement, I will firstly show the class differences between the different characters, analyse difficulties that emerge with the relationship between the characters induced by their class difference, and finally conclude with the statements that the text offers about class and culture of the late 19th century. For the utilitarians of the 19th century "only will power and a degree of talent were needed to achieve economic and social success", so that people became increasingly class-conscious and attempted to rise in terms of their social class. The rise of the working and middle classes led to growing fear of the upper classes and with the right to vote for educated middle-class members, the upper classes had to rule the country together with them.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2018 im Fachbereich Didaktik für das Fach Deutsch - Literatur, Werke, Note: 1,3, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Universität Hannover (Deutsches Seminar), Veranstaltung: Stille - literarisch: Geschichte, Motivik, Didaxe, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: So vielfältig wie die Textsorten, in denen Stille thematisiert wird, sind auch die Repräsentationsformen derselben. So kann Stille nicht nur als angenehm und behaglich repräsentiert und empfunden werden, sondern auch als unangenehm, furchterregend oder traurig (z.B. ¿Funkstille¿, ¿Totenstille¿ oder beim traurigen Schweigen). Lyrik und Popsongs bilden zusammengenommen eine Vielfalt der Repräsentationsformen von Stille ab. Dabei legen literarische Gedichte den Fokus unter anderem auf die Verbundenheit mit der Natur, bilden jedoch auch eine Schnittstelle zur Popmusik, die Stille primär mit zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen in Verbindung bringt. An den Gedichten "Ein Gleiches" von Johann von Goethe, "Mondnacht" von Joseph von Eichendorff und "Sachliche Romanze" von Erich Kästner sowie an den Popsongs "Still" von Jupiter Jones und "The Sound of Silence" von Disturbed soll in dieser Arbeit untersucht werden, wie Stille in der Lyrik und Popmusik repräsentiert wird. Dabei soll analysiert werden, wie das Motiv der Stille stilistisch und thematisch umgesetzt wird, welche Wirkungen die Verwendung der unterschiedlichen Stilmittel bezüglich der Stille haben und welche Gemeinsamkeiten und/oder Unterschiede Gedichte und Popsongs bezüglich der Repräsentationsformen von Stille haben. Diese Aspekte sind besonders interessant, weil das Motiv der Stille in der Literaturwissenschaft bisher wenig Beachtung fand und somit kaum erforscht ist. Dementsprechend basiert die Arbeit auf der eigenen Analyse und Interpretation der Primärtexte und verwendet kaum Sekundärliteratur. Für die Interpretation der Gedichte und Popsongs werden Stilmittel und Form analysiert. Zusätzlich wird bei den Popsongs die musikalische Gestaltung mitberücksichtigt, um ein Gesamtbild zu schaffen. Nach erfolgter Analyse und Interpretation aller Primärtexte werden die jeweiligen Ergebnisse miteinander in Verbindung gesetzt und sollen schlussendlich einen Einblick in die verschiedenen Repräsentationsformen von Stille in Lyrik und Popmusik liefern.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,0, University of Hannover (Englisches Seminar), language: English, abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyze Malick¿s film with regard to earlier notions of assimilation and othering. By exploring how earlier notions of assimilation, othering and sentimentalism of the late 19th century are combined with a newly interpreted version of the Pocahontas myth, I will analyze the film¿s cultural work in the historical context of its making. In order to do this, I will rely on concepts linked to historical film, and on a comparative approach that takes earlier representations of Native Americans and specific notions like Social Darwinism into account. As a blind person, I am particularly suited to analyze the sound design, since this is a dimension of film that is often ignored. I will therefore pay close attention to the use of music, and to specific techniques of tone like the use of voice-overs. In order to analyze music, I will concentrate on the used instruments, and on the effect that music creates concerning the atmosphere of the film and the film¿s interpretation. By considering how concepts and ideas from the 17th and 19th century survive in contemporary media, I want to analyze what happens to these notions when they are adapted to new forms of media (film), and how these old ideas are adapted to an entirely different situation of the present American society.
