In broad outline, native occupation of the Central High Plains can be summarized as follows. The area west of the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains, in south-cental Colorado, was dominated throughout the historic period by Utes who joined the Comanche bands after 1706 to make forays onto the plains. The Central High Plains was dominated by Apaches during the 1500s and 1600s with other tribes crossing in or entering the plains only incidentally.

In 1982, the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management contracted with Professor James H. Gunnerson to write an overview of a large area defined as the Central High Plains, a region encompassing eastern Colorado, northeastern New Mexico, western Kansas, western Nebraska, the Texas panhandle, and parts of Oklahoma. The purpose to this study is to provide a baseline narrative for the prehistory in this region in order to enable land managing agencies like the Forest Service and the BLM to understand the extent of prehistoric resources that might be present on these federal lands.

The final report from the Utah Statewide Archeological Survey that covers an area bounded on the north by the Uintah Mountains, on the west by the Wasatch Mountains and Plateau, and on the south by the southern edge of the Dirty Devil drainage. The Colorado River and the Utah-Colorado state line form the eastern boundary.
