Set in a central California coastal town of Morro Bay, the story follows a fisherman, marine biologist, and a commercial diver as they discover a secret business of hunting sperm whales for their valuable teeth. The mysterious Morro Rock, desolate sand dunes, treacherous currents of the harbor channel, and quaint waterfront all play a role in their discoveries and their ultimate encounter, on the high seas, with a ruthless band of fisherman caught in the act of hunting a whale. They risk their boat and their lives to stop the attack, but the final judgement is left to a vengeful sperm whale in a harrowing encounter that echoed off the face of Morro Rock.
Places where humans have suffered deep emotional wounds and psychological disorders over extended periods of time tend to be intensely haunted. That is why ghosts and other paranormal phenomena are readily discovered in prisons and jails and serve as prime targets for adventurous ghost hunters. Many of these facilities, established in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, are now open as museums or historic sites, affording ghost hunters fantastic opportunities to experience the spirits of those who endured lengthy incarceration, physical torture, unimaginable psychological stress, and death under the most miserable conditions. Jeff Dwyer's America's Haunted prisons and Jails: A Ghost Hunter's Guide will expose many fascinating personal stories of in-mates and guards, and guide you through the arcane history of escape attempts, jail cell suicides, prison riots, and botched executions. This amazing collection of stories will serve as an essential foundation for your investigations of intensely haunted prisons and jails and reveal some startling secrets of deeply troubled spirits who remain in these wretched places.
When I quit my day job in the summer of 2006 to bring an idea of mine to life as an Internet startup, I was faced with a huge number of questions and not a lot of clear answers. The excitement of starting a new project was soon tempered by the difficulty of choosing among the dizzying array of possible technical platforms and solutions. While the shelves were full of books focusing on each of the components of a web application, what I really wanted was a look at how all the pieces fit together. Too often, I found books that seemed like annotated versions of Javadocs, with he- ful explanatory notes that setEnabled(boolean enabled) would set the enabled flag. At the other end of the spectrum were abstract architectural tracts that might have made for good reading but certainly didn't give me a head start on the architecture. I wanted to see how these technologies worked when used for nontrivial applications; I wanted to see ugly problems and their solutions-I wanted a look at the source code of a modern web application.
