The Embodiment of Abolition follows two death penalty abolitionists, Rev. Dr. Jeff Hood, a death row spiritual advisor, and Alli Sullivan, a college student turned abolitionist, through the wide range of experiences and emotions that come with death penalty work. Much of the book was written in the immediate wake of Arthur Brown Jr.'s execution in Texas, a friend of Alli and Jeff's, and culminates with the execution of Anthony Sanchez in Oklahoma. Death penalty work is incredibly isolating. It is our hope that this book brings comfort to other abolitionists who know all too well the experiences we've described in this book, and shows that they are not alone. It is also our further hope that this book brings a new level of understanding about the folks who are condemned to die- a reminder that they, too, are human.

*On November 29th of 2020, I decided to record my thoughts for ten minutes. This is the transcription.
Reading Jeff Hood's brilliant first collection of poems we get to experience how one man lives his soul path. His I-Thou relationship with everything includes scrambling up rocky ridges, writing poems, flowing through white water, and nurturing his blessed apricot tree. This modern-day Thoreau invites us in to the struggle to make his livelihood support his quest, to make sense of the consumptive culture we've created, and especially to explore his relationship with the mysterious divine feminine. Men who want to live your hero's journey, and women who want to support your man's quest, here is a guide book calling us to be the pine in the wind, to fly through the snow, to know the sacred in your lover's touch, even to find music in the sound of traffic.Jane Lipman, Poet, On the Back Porch of the Moon, Winner of the 2013 New Mexico/Arizona Book Award and a NM Press Women's Awar

George Wallace. Albert Brewer. Titan. Reformer. Past. Future. Rage. Hope. Devolution. Evolution. Though there are many words to describe it all, the 1970 Alabama Gubernatorial Primary was an election unlike any election seen before...or since. This was no modern democratic election. This was a blood match...the one with the most teeth left at the sound if the bell would be declared the winner. Sound backward? This was Alabama. It was almost as if the Civil Rights Movement had never happened. Maybe it hadn't. Integration was still almost nonexistent. Though some folks wanted change, most still didn't. Politicians were more than happy to pander to the fears of the masses. Time and again, fear had proven to be the only strategy worth employing. Courage was seen as weakness. In the midst of such lunacy, the election commenced.
Late one night, something happened. I'm not entirely sure what. I just know that God found me. By the morning, I'd written, "The Revised Gospels of Jesus Christ." They're written from where I was at. I released them over time. I guess I thought they might be too overwhelming all at once. In these revisions, I found relevance. In the midst of transcription, I am sure that I made mistakes. It was impossible to prevent it...everything was just coming at me so fast. Regardless, there is life to be found in these words. I know. I've lived them.Rev. Dr. Jeff HoodMay 24, 2020

I used to think that life was about maintaining relationships. Now, I realize that such thinking is a prison. We cannot be fully free until we are fully free to choose. These otherworldly stories/or perhaps not so otherworldly stories are about choosing.
