1919. From the Foreword: It was my intention, when preparing The Little Book of Modern Verse, published in 1913, to continue the series by a volume once in five years, but as it seemed inadvisable to issue one during the war, it is now six years since the publication of the first volume...While I have not hesitated, where a poet's earlier work seemed finer and more characteristic than his later, to draw upon such earlier work, in the main, The Second Book of Modern Verse has been selected from poetry published since 1913, the date of my first anthology. Some of the poets represented in this volume include: Robert Frost, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Sara Teasdale, Josephine Preston Peabody, Vachel Lindsay, John G. Neihardt, Margaret Widdemar, Amy Lowell, Carl Sandburg, Conrad Aiken, James Oppenheim, Joyce Kilmer, Louis Untermeyer and Clement Wood. 1913. From the Foreword: The Little Book of Modern Verse, as its name implies, is not a formal anthology. The pageant of American Poetry has been so often presented that no necessity exists for another exhaustive review of the art. Nearly all anthologies, however, stop short of the present group of poets, or represent them so inadequately that only those in close touch with the trend of American literature know what the poet of today is contributing to it. Some of the poets represented in this volume include: Joyce Kilmer, Richard Burton, Alice Brown, George Cabot Lodge, Sara Teasdale, George Santayana, Edwin Markham, James Whitcomb Riley, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and John G. Neihardt.
