Verket innehåller bland annat dikten "Vårt land" vars första och sista verser kom att bli Finlands nationalsång. Diktsamlingen innehåller texter som beskriver både fiktiva och verkliga händelser som tog plats under det finska kriget 1808-1809 och präglas av den framväxande nationalromantiken och sorgen över det svenska nederlaget. Johan Ludvig Runeberg (1804-1877) var en finlandssvensk författare och poet. Han skrev och diktade främst på svenska, men hans verk översattes därefter till finska och många andra språk. Runeberg betraktas som Finlands nationalskald och från hans verk har texten till den finska nationalsången hämtats.
