Most people who live around Cameron Park and El Dorado Hills know that Bass Lake is on Bass Lake Road, a mile or so north of Highway 50. But few, if any of them know from whence Bass Lake came, or why it is there.Old-time residents recall that at one time you could picnic and go fishing at Bass Lake. Stories abound, but to many, the lake's origins are lost.No doubt many would be surprised to learn that Bass Lake, or American Reservoir, as it was known then, was a part of the great mining ditch systems of the California Gold Rush. American Reservoir became the eastern terminus of what was first known as the Eureka Ditch, later as the Crawford Ditch, and then as the Park Canal and Mining Company ditch system. This is the story of the development of the mining ditches of southern El Dorado County, the story of the ditch companies that built those ditch systems, and how and when Bass Lake, originally known as the American Reservoir, came to be a living artifact of the Gold Rush of 1849.

""Etymons of English Words"" is a comprehensive reference book originally published in 1826 by John Thomson. The book provides an in-depth exploration of the origins and development of English words, tracing their roots back to their earliest known forms and examining how they have evolved over time. The author draws on a wide range of sources, including Latin, Greek, French, and German, to shed light on the etymology of English words. The book is divided into chapters based on different categories of words, such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives, and includes extensive cross-referencing to help readers navigate the complex web of linguistic connections. ""Etymons of English Words"" is an essential resource for anyone interested in the history and evolution of the English language. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
In 1832 John Thomson published the first large-scale atlas of Scotland organised by county. Not only did this provide an invaluable and accurate picture of Scotland prior to the Clearances but it also marked out this Atlas as a highly significant milestone in the history of mapping.
