"... Qu'était-ce donc que le Temple ? A Paris, l'enceinte du Temple comprenait tout le grand quartier, triste et mal peuplé, qui en a conservé le nom. C'était un tiers du Paris d'alors. A l'ombre du Temple et sous sa puissante protection vivait une foule de serviteurs, de familiers, d'affiliés, et aussi de gens condamnés; les maisons de l'ordre avaient droit d'asile. Philippe-le-Bel lui-même en avait profité en 1306, lorsqu'il était poursuivi par le peuple soulevé. II restait encore, à l'époque de la révolution, un monument de cette ingratitude royale, la grosse tour à quatre tourelles, bâtie en 1222. Elle servit de prison à Louis XVI. Le Temple de Paris était le centre de l'ordre, son trésor; les chapitres généraux s'y tenaient. Deux choses qui arrivent au déclin des empires: le découragement général et la diminution du travail, la complication progressive de l'administration et des dépenses. Telle la fin de l'empire romain.
