"... Qu'était-ce donc que le Temple ? A Paris, l'enceinte du Temple comprenait tout le grand quartier, triste et mal peuplé, qui en a conservé le nom. C'était un tiers du Paris d'alors. A l'ombre du Temple et sous sa puissante protection vivait une foule de serviteurs, de familiers, d'affiliés, et aussi de gens condamnés; les maisons de l'ordre avaient droit d'asile. Philippe-le-Bel lui-même en avait profité en 1306, lorsqu'il était poursuivi par le peuple soulevé. II restait encore, à l'époque de la révolution, un monument de cette ingratitude royale, la grosse tour à quatre tourelles, bâtie en 1222. Elle servit de prison à Louis XVI. Le Temple de Paris était le centre de l'ordre, son trésor; les chapitres généraux s'y tenaient. De cette maison dépendaient toutes les provinces de l'ordre: Portugal, Castille et Léon, Aragon, Majorque, Allemagne, Italie, Pouille et Sicile, Angleterre et Irlande. Dans le nord, l'ordre teutonique était sorti du Temple, comme en Espagne d'autres ordres militaires se formèrent de ses débris. L'immense majorité des templiers étaient Français, particulièrement les grands-maîtres..."

" ... En 1689, la France, attaquée par l'Europe, se regarde, et voit qu'au bout de dix années de paix elle est ruinée. Qui a fait cette ruine ? Deux choses qui arrivent au déclin des empires: le découragement général et la diminution du travail, la complication progressive de l'administration et des dépenses. Telle la fin de l'empire romain. Ajoutez-y l'amputation énorme que la France vient de faire sur elle-même. En 1661, à l'avènement de Colbert, il n'y avait qu'une cour, toute petite, et qui tenait dans Saint-Germain. Sans parler de Monsieur qui réside à Saint-Cloud, ni du Chantilly des Condé, tout le gracieux amphithéâtre qui couronne la Seine, se couvre de maisons royales. Le Dauphin maintenant est devenu un homme, et il a sa cour à Meudon. Les enfants naturels du roi, de La Vallière, de Montespan, fils et filles, reconnus, mariés, tiennent un grand état. Les Condé et les Orléans épousent ces filles de l'amour, les petites reines légitimées de France. Chacune devient un centre, a sa cour et ses courtisans. De Villers-Cotterêts à Chantilly ou à Anet, de Fontainebleau ou de Choisy à Sceaux, à Meudon, à Saint-Cloud, de Rueil à Marly, à Saint-Germain, tout est palais, tout est Versailles..."
