Tout était en saillie. Tout gravitait autour d'un fait très public, le Système. Tout entrait dans le drame, et paraissait au premier plan, le mal surtout. Ce temps ne voilait rien. Il en est autrement de Fleury et de Louis XV. Les gouvernements successifs ont cru de-voir cacher cette histoire de prêtre et de roi. C'est un mystère d'Ãtat. Deux personnes en ce siècle ont seules eu la faveur d'en ouvrir les archives diplomatiques, l'historien de la Régence Lemontey, et celui de la Chute des Jésuites. Les quarante années qui s'étendent de l'une à l'autre époque n'étaient guère connues jusqu'à nous que dans les événements qu'on peut dire extérieurs, militaires, littéraires, les anecdotes de Paris. Pour le centre réel de l'action, du gouvernement, l'intérieur de Versailles, qui le savait ? personne. Porte close. On n'y entrait pas. C'était trop haut pour les simples mortels. Affaire de Cabinet ! Grand mot qui fermait tout. Ce n'était pas figure. "... Louis XVI n'eut rien de la France, ne la soupçonna même pas. De race et par sa mère, il était un pur Allemand, de la molle Saxe des Augustes, obèse et alourdie de sang, charnelle et souvent colérique. Mais, à la différence des Augustes, son honnêteté naturelle, sa dévotion, le rendirent régulier dans ses moeurs, sa vie domestique. En pleine Cour il était solitaire, ne vivant qu'à la chasse, dans les bois de Versailles, à Compiègne ou à Rambouillet. C'est uniquement pour la chasse, pour conserver ses habitudes, qu'il tint les Ãtats généraux à Versailles (si près de Paris !). S'il n'eût vécu ainsi, il serait devenu énorme, comme les Augustes, un monstre de graisse, comme son père le Dauphin, qui dit lui-même, à dix-sept ans, ne pouvoir traîner la masse de son corps . Mais ce violent exercice est comme une sorte d'ivresse. Il lui fit une vie de taureau ou de sanglier. Les jours entiers au bois par tous les temps. Le soir, un gros repas où il tombait de sommeil, non d'ivresse, quoi qu'on ait dit. Il n'était nullement crapuleux comme Louis XV. Mais c'était un barbare, un homme tout de chair et de sang. De là sa dépendance de la reine. On le vit dès son âge de vingt ans, dans la crise indécente de juillet 74. On le vit d'une manière effrayante dans les premières grossesses. Il va sans dire que les conjures sont la tous des laches et des imbeciles. Le ju;, 'e accusateur leur prodigue a chaque instant des epithetes outrageantes. Sur de n'etre pas dementi, il attribue a la plupart d'entre eux les plus tristes palinodies. Sans doute plusieurs, surtout des conjures militaires, Russes de la vieille roche, habitues des l'enfance a diviniser l'empereur, revinrent sincerement a ce culte, et virent dans l'evenement du 14 decembre le jugement de Dieu; mais pour le grand nombre des autres, n'a-t-on pas droit de supposer que des juges si partiaux n'ont voulu que les fletrir? Ce qui le fait croire, c'est que cette enquete si laborieusement travaillee contient des faits avoues faux par tous les par tis, de fausses...
