Bereits vor etwa dreizehn Jahren wurden die Studien begonnen, deren Ergebnisse in diesem klein en Buche zusammengefasst sind. Immer wieder musste ieh sie drangender Amtspfliehten oder andrer litterariseher Arbeiten wegen unterbreehen, und aueh jetzt habe ieh manehes nur beriihren konnen oder ganz unbesproehen gelassen, was eine nahere Untersuehung wohl verdient hiitte. Andrerseits not~igte mieh del' U mstand, dass ieh den gleiehen Gegenstand in einigen liingeren Artikeln fUr G. Wissowa's Real-Eneyelopadie der classisehen Altertumswissensehaft zu bearbeiten hatte, aueh wieder zu bedeuten den Kiirzungen und Umgestaltungen von einzelnen der friiher bereits niedergesehriebenen Absehnitte. Wenn daher dem Leser manehe Un gleiehmassigkeiten in dem zu sehr versehiedenen Zeiten niederge sehl'iebenen und an vielen Stellen umgearbeiteten Buche auffallen soUten, wiirde es mieh nieht wundern; ganz konnte sie eben die letzte, absehliessende Redaktion nieht vermeiden. Auf Theodor Birt's Bueh 'Das antike Buehwesen in seinem Verhaltniss zur Litteratur' (Berlin 1882) musste ieh natiirlieh, aus gesproehea und unausgesproehen, fast bei jeder wiehtigeren Frage Bezug nehmen. Dass ersteres vielfaeh, ja vorwiegend in Fallen ge sehehen ist, wo ieh eine von jenem Gelehrten abweiehende Ansieht vertrete, liegt in del' Natur del' Saehe, da ieh gel'ade in solehen Fallen die Kenntniss des antiken Buehwesens fordern zu konnen glaubte.
