" ... La chapelle du château de la Frette était dans les parties basses de la construction, et ne recevait le jour que par les fossés. Les petites localités champêtres semées autour de Paris ont joui, de tout temps, du privilège plus ou moins réel d'offrir des résidences économiques aux familles peu aisées. Quelques années avant la Révolution, beaucoup de gentilshommes qui avaient perdu leur fortune, ou qui n'en avaient jamais eu, se retiraient à Saint-Mandé, joli village bâti à la lisière du bois de Vincennes, et se prolongeant du côté de Charenton. Si Saint-Mandé ne présentait pas alors, comme aujourd'hui, ces jolis groupes d'habitations moitié urbaines, moitié rurales, s'ouvrant d'un côté sur la rue, et sur des rues avec pavé, réverbères et numéros, de l'autre sur le bois de Vincennes; s'il ne possédait pas encore une avenue d'une beauté, d'une régularité, d'une élégance tout à fait américaines, digne de rivaliser avec quelques quartiers de New-York et de Philadelphie; longues rangées de maisons élevées derrière une longue rangée d'arbres, arbres odoriférants, tilleuls qui embaument le ciel, la terre et l'air vers la fin du printemps, maisons qui ressemblent à de petits palais; si Saint-Mandé n'était pas si joli, il était beaucoup plus sauvage. Le bois de Vincennes le retenait et l'enveloppait en plus d'un endroit; avant d'y arriver, on avait à traverser des portions assez considérables de terrain planté de chênes et d'ormes. L'hiver, il n'était pas prudent de se laisser attarder loin de sa maison, si l'on ne voulait donner aucune inquiétude à ses enfants et à ses serviteurs. Quoique Vincennes élevât toujours au milieu de la brume ses tourelles pleines de poudre, son donjon rempli de fusils, on parlait souvent d'assassinats commis aux environs: la peur en grossissait le nombre. On n'était pas fâché, au fond, d'avoir cette peur qui rend si doux, si étroit, si complet le bonheur de se réunir l'hiver autour de la cheminée, quand on est sûr que la porte de la maison est fermée, que la grille l'est aussi, et que les croisées basses sont barricadées comme pour soutenir un siège.
