It is especially true for the millions of people who have come to the USA seeking a better life - the American Dream. Sadly, not enough stories have been shared about the challenges and adversities that one has faced and overcome. Westbound documents one girl's experience from Beijing, China to New York City, USA. Noting her struggles, hardships, tears, laughs, love, friendship, learning, and culture shock, Dr. Li Tian describes her growth and ambitions during a transformational period in her life. In telling her story, Dr. Li hopes to promote more openness, sharing, and understanding among people from all walks of life. She also hopes to entice her readers to reflect on their own stories and how they have overcome their personal adversities in order to achieve the success and life they've always envisioned.

2011年至2013年，中国中央电视台国际频道《华人世界 》和江苏电视台国际频道《华人面孔》相继播出了本书编著者采访拍摄的五十二位海外华人的故事。这些人物包括华裔刑侦鉴识专家李昌钰、首位进入太空的华人王赣骏、首位加拿大女性华裔国会议员梁陈明任和美国华人飞行协会首任会长汪任等人。由于电视台节目播出时间有限，采访拍摄的大量素材并没有被完全利用。因为这些素材在不同层面上反映了海外华人生活的真实面貌，他们的人生经验和感悟是一笔难得的财富。编著者把部分人物的素材整理了出来，希望这些素材能够为年轻人指点一下前进路上的迷津。
