Louis Joseph Vance (September 19, 1879-December 16, 1933) was an American novelist, born in Washington, D. C., and educated in the preparatory department of the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. Vance was separated from his wife (whom he had married in 1898 and who had borne him a son in 1899) when he was found dead in 1933. He was in a burnt armchair inside his New York apartment. A cigarette had ignited some benzene (used for cleaning his clothes or for his broken jaw) that he had on his body, and he had been intoxicated at the time of death. He had recently returned from the West Indies, where he had gathered material for a new book. The death was ruled accidental.

These three words have come to connote in our understanding so much of human misery, to Mr. Kirkwood they seemed to epitomize absolutely, if not happily, the various circumstances attendant upon the predicament wherein he found himself. Inevitably an extremist, because of his youth, (he had just turned twenty-five), he took, no count of mitigating matters, and would hotly have resented the suggestion that his case was anything but altogether deplorable and forlorn. ANARCHY "What you gonna have?" To this inquiry the patron made no response; head bent, nose between the pages of the magazine, she pored sedulously over a legend attached to one of the illustrations. After a decent pause in waiting the waitress renewed her demand with a sharper accent: "Say, lis'en; what you want?" "White satin, veiled with point d' Angleterre, '" Miss Manvers replied distinctly, if without looking up, aware simply of something imperative in the starched but humid presence at her elbow. Pardonably startled, the waitress demanded with the rising inflection: "Wha-a-at?" "'The court train, '" Miss Manvers pursued in abstraction, "'is lined with lace and dotted with bouquets of orange-blossoms--'" She checked herself suddenly, looked up shyly, and essayed a pale, apologetic smile. "I'm sorry; I didn't realise--" But now the waitress had caught a glimpse of the illustration and was bending over the patron's shoulder for a better look. "Gee!" she commented sincerely. "Ain't that a dream?" "Yes," Miss Manvers admitted wistfully, "it's a dream, right enough!" "That's so, too." Deftly, with a large, moist, red hand, the waitress arranged knife, fork, spoon, and paper serviette on the unclothed brown board before Miss Manvers. "That's the worst of them fashion mag'zines," she complained; "they get your goat. Sometimes after readin' some of that dope I can't hardly remember orders right, just for wishin' somebody'd come along and hang some of them joyful rags onto me!" Then, catching the eye of the manager, she straightway resumed her professional habit of slightly wilted hauteur--compounded in equal parts of discontent, tired feet, heat-fag and that profound disdain for food-consuming animals which inevitably informs the mind of every quick-lunch waitress. "What you gonna have?" she demanded dispassionately.
No Man's Land is a novel written by Louis Joseph Vance, which was first published in 1915. The story is set during World War I and follows the journey of an American soldier named John Scott as he navigates the dangers and uncertainties of the war. The two fall in love, but their relationship is complicated by the war and the fact that Helene is engaged to another man. As Scott recovers from his injuries, he is sent back to the front lines and finds himself in the midst of the infamous No Man's Land, the area between the opposing trenches where soldiers are often caught in a deadly crossfire. Throughout the novel, Vance explores the themes of love, sacrifice, and the devastating effects of war. The story is filled with vivid descriptions of the battlefield, the horrors of trench warfare, and the emotional toll that war takes on soldiers and civilians alike. No Man's Land is a gripping and poignant novel that offers a powerful glimpse into the realities of World War I and the human experiences that shaped that tumultuous era.1910. No Man's Land by Vance, American screenwriter, short story writer and novelist begins: A gentleman who, leaving his offices on lower Broadway a trifle after four, presently ensconced himself in a corner seat of a Subway express and opened before him a damp afternoon paper (with an eye for the market reports) was surprised, when the train crashed heavily into the Fourteenth Street station, to find himself afoot and making for the door: this although his intention had been to alight at Grand Central. Thus it may be, that trickster in us all, which we are accustomed vaguely to denominate the subconscious mind, directs our actions to an end predestined. "Mrs. Bellamy Druce! Rather a mouthful, that." "Is that why you make a face over it?" "Didn't expect me to relish it, did you, Cinda?" "I'm afraid I wasn't thinking of you at all, Dobbin, when I took it." "Meaning, if you had been, you might have thought twice before taking?" "No fear: I was much too madly in love with Bel." "Was?" "Dobbin!" "Sorry-didn't mean to be impertinent." "I don't believe you. Still, I'm so fond of you, I'll forgive you-this once." "Won't have to twice. I only-well, naturally, I wanted to know whether or not it had taken." "Taken?"
She stood on the southeast corner of Broadway at Twenty-second Street, waiting for a northbound car with a vacant seat. She had been on her feet all day and was very tired, so tired that the prospect of being obliged to stand all the way uptown seemed quite intolerable. And so, though quick with impatience to get home and "have it over with," she chose to wait. Up out of the south, from lower Broadway and the sweatshop purlieus of Union Square, defiled an unending procession of surface cars, without exception dark with massed humanity. Pausing momentarily before the corner where the girl was waiting (as if mockingly submitting themselves to the appraisal of her alert eyes) one after another received the signal of the switchman beyond the northern crossing and ground sluggishly on. Not one but was crowded to the guards, affording the girl no excuse for leaving her position.
"Then I'm to understand there's no hope for me?" "I'm afraid not...." Greyerson said reluctantly, sympathy in his eyes. "None whatever." The verdict was thus brusquely emphasized by Hartt, one of the two consulting specialists. Having spoken, he glanced at his watch, then at the face of his colleague, Bushnell, who contented himself with a tolerant waggle of his head, apparently meant to imply that the subject of their deliberations really must be reasonable: anybody who wilfully insists on footing the measures of life with a defective constitution for a partner has no logical excuse for being reluctant to pay the Piper.
