Fra Tommaso Campanella la sua Congiura, I Suoi Processi e la Sua Pazzia
I. Si conosce oramai per documenti essere il Campanella nato in Stilo, il 5 7bre 1568, da Geronimo e Caterina Martello, ed essere stato battezzato col nome di Gio. Domenico, il 12 7bre, nella Chiesa di S. Biagio al Borgo, che le scritture dell'Archivio di Stato ci rivelano a que' tempi una delle cinque Chiese parrocchiali della città, oggi ridotte a tre. Coloro i quali poterono consultare i libri della detta parrocchia, che furono poi dispersi col sacco dato a Stilo da' briganti il 29 agosto 1806, assicurano di avervi letto questo brano: «A 12 settembre 1568. Battezato Giovan Domenico Campanella figlio di Geronimo, e Catarinella Martello nato il giorno cinque, da me D. Terentio Romano Par...
I. Al declinare del giorno 8 novembre 1599, le quattro galere provenienti dalla Calabria giungevano in vista di Napoli, e poco dopo un battello spiccavasi dal Regio «tarcenale», come allora si diceva, ed andava ad incontrarle. Nella sera, all'entrare in porto, dalle antenne di ciascuna galera si vide spenzolare un uomo appiccato, e due altri si videro squartare in mezzo alle galere medesime, «per spavento del populo di questa città, concorso in numero infinito alla fama di questi funesti spettacoli» . L'indomani, i carcerati venivano sbarcati e rinchiusi parte nel Castel nuovo e parte nel Castello dell'uovo.
