Luther Halsey Gulick, Jr. MD (1865-1918) was an American physical education instructor, international basketball official, and founder with his wife of the Camp Fire Girls, an international youth organization now known as Camp Fire. Types of Physical Activity Aerobic light to vigorous intensity physical activity that requires more oxygen than sedentary behavior and thus promotes cardiovascular fitness and other health benefits (e.g., jumping rope, biking, swimming, running; playing soccer, basketball, or volleyball). Anaerobic intense physical activity that is short in duration and requires a breakdown of energy sources in the absence of sufficient oxygen. Energy sources are replenished as an individual recovers from the activity. Anaerobic activity (e.g., sprinting during running, swimming, or biking) requires maximal performance during the brief period. Lifestyle physical activity typically performed on a routine basis (e.g., walking, climbing stairs, mowing or raking the yard), which is usually light to moderate in intensity. Physical activity play play activity that requires substantial energy expenditure (e.g., playing tag, jumping rope). Play activity with flexible rules, usually self selected, for the purpose of having fun.

His father was missionary physician Luther Halsey Gulick Sr. (1828-1891) and his mother was Louisa Lewis. His paternal grandfather Peter Johnson Gulick (1796-1877) was an even earlier missionary. He married Charlotte "Lottie" Emily Vetter of Hanover, New Hampshire in 1887. He studied at Oberlin Academy (a preparatory department of Oberlin College) 1880-1882 and 1883-1886 and at the Sargent Normal School for physical training (now the Boston University college of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences[2]) He graduated from the medical school of New York University in 1889.

The original manual of the Camp Fire Girls, an organization among whose founders were Dr. & Mrs. Luther Halsey Gulick, was published in 1912. The motto of the Camp Fire Girls, "WoHeLo," was also the name of the Gulick's summer camp on Lake Sebago, ME. It stood for "work, health, love." "The primary purpose of Camp Fire," said Dr. Gulick, "is to promote service to others, team work, and opportunities for a well rounded life."
