Seminar paper from the year 2023 in the subject Medicine - Pharmacology, Pharmacy, grade: A+, Utrecht University, course: Medicinal Chemistry, language: English, abstract: Chagas disease, also known as American trypanosomiasis, is a neglected tropical disease that poses a serious threat to public health in South and Central America, but not only there. The disease affects large groups of people in underdeveloped areas, causing around 12,000 deaths every year. There is no effective treatment for the chronic phase of the disease, while the drug-resistant strains of the Trypanosoma cruzi parasite start challenging the usefulness of the acute phase treatment. Consequently, new drug candidates need to be developed. This paper proposes a novel drug candidate that was created by optimising the lead molecule called CBZ-GlcN. The affinity of the reported drug candidate is exceptional (Kdiss = 7.11 nM), showing a 890-fold improvement over the affinity of CBZ-GlcN for TcGlcK. Furthermore, the new molecule exhibits advantageous pharmacokinetic properties. The paper also reports a suggested synthesis route for the drug candidate, which can be used to perform in vivo tests examining properties such as affinity, specificity, and toxicity of the drug candidate.

Scientific Essay from the year 2021 in the subject Mathematics - Statistics, grade: 7 (IB), , language: English, abstract: The aim of this paper is to investigate to what extent different systems of voting can affect the results and the distribution of votes in single-winner elections. Moreover, during elections, there are always politicians who hold extreme beliefs and are either loved or hated by people and those who hold tempered beliefs but are tolerable by society. Consequently, the research also examines which of the two mentioned characteristics a candidate should have to increase the chances of winning by applying basic statistical measures such as mean or standard deviation. The subject is relevant because it allows us to get a mathematical insight into single-winner electoral systems and can show whether a particular system of voting is only a tool, or directly contributes to the results. The paper analyses 4 different methods of voting that are or were used in the world to elect a President or other representatives for single-member posts: Supplementary Vote (SV), Instant-runoff voting (IRV), Bucklin Voting, and Coombs¿ method. It is worth adding that these systems are ranked-choice systems, that is voters rank their candidates from the most favorable one to the one that in their opinion is completely not suitable to accede to a particular office. Ranked-choice systems were chosen because this paper does not investigate only who wins the election but also how the situation of candidates in other positions changes.

Scientific Essay from the year 2021 in the subject Chemistry - Food Chemistry, grade: 7 (IB), , language: English, abstract: This paper aims to investigate how different temperatures influence the degradation of vitamin C as well as to clarify the preconception about this vitamin. More specifically, the relationship between the temperature and the concentration of vitamin C will be researched. The research suggests that vitamin C degrades in elevated temperatures so it is highly probable that it also degrades in hot tea and other hot beverages. Consequently, vitamin C is rather not the component of hot tea with lemon juice that provides curative properties, opposite to what many people believe. The subject is important because it extends the knowledge about how vitamin C degrades in different temperatures and how to handle this vitamin properly. The research shows at which temperature vitamin C is most effective and this information could be useful for pharmaceutical companies when improving the effectiveness and medicinal properties of drugs where vitamin C is the main constituent. The investigation uses the method of redox titration of vitamin C with iodine solution and the detailed information about this process is presented.

Scientific Essay from the year 2021 in the subject Psychology - Cognition, grade: 7 (IB), , language: English, abstract: This study wants to investigate the link between attention and the amount of information that can be held. This paper aims to test quantitatively the existence of iconic memory. The subject is relevant as it helps to understand how memory and its components work. According to the investigated model, iconic memory is a part of the first component of memory which information reaches. Moreover, it depends on sight which processes 83% of the stimulus so it is justified to extend the knowledge about this subject. The theoretical prediction is that the amount of correctly recalled information will depend on paying attention. Attention will be operationalized as a partialreport condition, where participants had to remember 4 elements from the grid or whole-report condition where they were instructed to recall all, 12 elements from the grid. The amount of correctly recalled information is shown as the percentage of correctly recalled characters from a grid.

Academic Paper from the year 2021 in the subject Biology - Micro- and Molecular Biology, grade: 6 (IB), , course: IB Diploma Programme, language: English, abstract: This paper aims to explore the changes in the pH of milk and the process of creaming that taken together represent the dependent variable, that is UHT milk spoilage. Most importantly, the connection between fat content and the dependent variable will be investigated. The research suggests that the rate of UHT milk spoilage increases with the amount of fat present in the milk, and this investigation will assess the validity of this statement. The importance of this subject is significant because UHT milk consumption constantly increases, reaching the threshold of 119 million tons in 2019 and constitutes a strong fundament of people¿s diet. The research extends the knowledge about the process of UHT milk spoilage and its link with fat content as well as gives food for thought when it comes to the UHT milk preservation methods, shelf life, and the impact of other ingredients on the process of spoilage.
