Madison Grant is largely forgotten today, but in the early 20th century, he was a leading environmentalist. He spearheaded the effort to save America's buffalo and majestic redwood trees. He might be considered a lion of progressivism if not for the fact that If he is known at all, it is due to his belief--shared by many, if not most, early 20th century progressives--that Darwinism logically, rationally, and morally entailed 'eugenics.' Grant firmly believed that if evolution were true, then it was obvious, if not self-evident, that the human species itself could be seen as manifesting evolutionary adaptations. Grant saw the different races and their respective (supposeedly unique) characteristics as illustrative of this viewpoint. He also felt it demonstrable that some of the 'races' were biologically inferior to others, at least in relation to being 'adapted' to 'modern society.' His book, "The Passing of the Great Race", expressed his deep concern that the biologically 'superior' (for example, northern Europeans) would be 'swamped' by the 'inferiors' (Slavs, 'negros', etc).This quote from the book will give the reader a glimpse into Madison Grant's mind: "Mistaken regard for what are believed to be divine laws and a sentimental belief in the sanctity of human life tend to prevent both the elimination of defective infants and the sterilization of such adults as are themselves of no value to the community. The laws of nature require the obliteration of the unfit and human life is valuable only when it is of use to the community or race."Far from being ostracized for such views, Grant was highly regarded, counting people like the progressive president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, as a friend. Not surprisingly, it is also reported that a certain man named Hitler would also resonate with Grant's conclusions.Having put it in these terms, it is perhaps not surprising at all that Madison Grant is not very well known today. The Passing of the Great Race: Or, The Racial Basis of European History is an early and influential book on eugenics written by the American eugenicist, lawyer, and amateur anthropologist Madison Grant. Though influential, the book was largely ignored when it first appeared; it went through several revisions and editions and retained a following. Grant expounds a theory of Nordic superiority and argues for a strong eugenics program. Grant's proposal to create a strong eugenics program for the Nordic population to survive was repudiated by Americans in the 1930s and Europeans after 1945. Nonetheless it is considered one of the main works in the 20th century tradition of scientific racism and has been described as "The Manifesto of Scientific Racism" and remains topical to this day.

A leading conservationist in the United States, Madison Grant's preoccupation with biodiversity was not limited to wildlife, but also extended to humans, particularly where that biodiversity intersected with the wider sweep of history, its meaning and interpretation, and government policy. Grant provides here a racial and ethnic history of the European settlement of North America, spanning from the ancient nations of Europe to the United States of his day. His thesis was that the United States was settled mostly by Northwestern Europeans, particularly English and Ulster Scots. To his mind, this relative homogeneity, plus the generally high quality of these enterprising settlers, conferred upon the new nation its prosperity, cohesion, stability, and defining cultural characteristics.Grant was concerned that then recent waves of immigration from poorer parts of Europe would lead to social instability, division, economic decline, and a growing underclass. He also thought that the failure to deal with problems left by slavery stored trouble for the future. Grant's represents today an unfashionable opinion, and his framework of analysis-not to mention his Nordic bias-makes him seem biased and outdated. Yet, he remains historically important. The old arguments have not gone away: as in Europe, they are being updated and revisited in the United States, which is now more socially unstable and more divided than previously thought possible.
