Ya el gran Aristóteles nos hablaba sobre los ''tópicos''en su libro ''el organon''. Los tópicos, para que puedan recordarlo, son los lugares de argumentación que se tiene en la retórica, pùes siempre se debe comenzar desde algo. Este libro que trata sobre los tópicos, en realidad es otro ''manual'' donde Marco Tulio Cicerón le explica a Cayo Trebacio (un jurista romano) qué son estos tópicos. Todo sistema dialéctico consta de dos partes: la invención y el juicio. En ambas fué Aristóteles (á mi ver) el príncipe. Los estóicos trabajaron sólo en una de las dos: en la ciencia del juicio, que llamaron dialéctica, y abandonaron del todo la Tópica o arte de invención, que es más útil y, en el orden de la naturaleza, la primera. Nosotros, encontrando en ambas suma utilidad, nos proponemos tratar de las dos, comenzando por la Tópica.
