This book contains the best images from my most recent trip to Africa, It was my fourth and most extensive trip, traveling to many of the iconic wildlife parks in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. I have photographed on all seven continents over a professional career that spans more than 45 years and throughout that time the wild creatures of Africa--and specifically East Africa--have held the most attraction for me. When my partner, Christine, suggested that we visit mountain gorillas, travel research revealed that with a little effort a three country safari could be readily organized. After a month on the Internet planning we arranged to visit over a dozen top wildlife parks across the three countries in addition to the gorillas of Uganda's Bwindi Impenentrable Forest. Of the many thousands of images that I captured in these parks the very best are included on the pages of this book along with descriptions of the action at hand.

In 1996 writer-adventurer Mark Newman traveled to the Galapagos Islands. He stayed in the famed archipelago for longer than Charles Darwin had and visited more than twice as many of the islands. Here is his fascinating account of that journey, undertaken partly by Brigantine Schooner, partly by kayak, and partly on foot. There are animal encounters galore, a hike around the second largest caldera in the world, and plenty of entertaining anecdotes about the lesser known aspects of Darwin's 1835 visit. Globetrotters, wildlife enthusiasts, armchair explorers, and Darwin history buffs will all find this book irresistible.

Did you ever wonder what it would have been like to be a white kid growing up in East L.A. in the '50s and '60s? The smoggy air, gangs, lowered cars full of mean vatos - dangerous, depressive, and scary. Hey, IT WAS GREAT!!My name is Tommy Jacobs, and I was a white kid, born and raised in East L.A. This story, in the genre of historical fiction, will show you my 'East Los'. It was a place full of fun, adventure, and many good people. Ready for a change after high school, I turned my world upside down and went to college up north in redwood country, where a full-blooded Hoopa Indian gave me an eye-opening introduction to his world. Then, to avoid the draft, I became a Peace Corps Volunteer, and got snarled up in the war in El Salvador.

There is science behind every aspect of music and music making. What is sound? How does it travel? How do we make musical sounds, with musical instruments, recordings, or electronics? What makes a good concert hall? How is music sent over the Internet? How does a trumpet work, or a synthesizer, or the human voice? This book addresses all these questions and more, offering a comprehensive introduction to the scientific study of music that draws on ideas from physics, biology, mathematics, and engineering to explain how music works. Using some mathematics but avoiding calculus, the book offers a step-by-step discussion of the science of music, starting with the nature of sound waves, and covering musical pitch and scales, sound energy and loudness, harmonics and timbre, the human ear, room acoustics, digital sound, recording technology, and the workings of a wide range of musical instruments, from traditional string and wind instruments to contemporary workhorses such as electric guitar and electronic instruments. The book is suitable for instructors or students studying the science of music at the undergraduate level, or for any scientifically curious reader who wishes to learn about this intriguing field.

This book explains the fundamentals of computational physics and describes in simple terms the techniques that every physicist should know, such as finite difference methods, numerical quadrature, and the fast Fourier transform. The book offers a complete introduction to the topic at the undergraduate level, and is also suitable for the advanced student or researcher who wants to learn the foundational elements of this important field.

Fourier's discovery that almost any signal could be built out of basic sine waves, was years ahead of its time. The Fourier Series, and its later developments: the Fourier Transform and the Fast Fourier Transform, lie at the heart of so many of our electronic devices today. From the mobile phone sitting in your pocket, to early warning systems that keep aircraft engines running safely, Fourier is there, telling you which sine waves are present in your signal. The standard approach to teaching complicated mathematical concepts in schools and universities relies more on mathematical analysis and the student's capability to manipulate equations, than on his or her intuition. A good diagram and a clear analogy are often worth a thousand words. This book will guide you systematically, visually, and intuitively through each of the core concepts making up the Fourier Series; granting you the knowledge you need to confidently use one of the cornerstones of signal analysis.

From the Internet to networks of friendship, disease transmission, and even terrorism, the concept--and the reality--of networks has come to pervade modern society. But what exactly is a network? What different types of networks are there? Why are they interesting, and what can they tell us? In recent years, scientists from a range of fields--including mathematics, physics, computer science, sociology, and biology--have been pursuing these questions and building a new "e;science of networks."e; This book brings together for the first time a set of seminal articles representing research from across these disciplines. It is an ideal sourcebook for the key research in this fast-growing field. The book is organized into four sections, each preceded by an editors' introduction summarizing its contents and general theme. The first section sets the stage by discussing some of the historical antecedents of contemporary research in the area. From there the book moves to the empirical side of the science of networks before turning to the foundational modeling ideas that have been the focus of much subsequent activity. The book closes by taking the reader to the cutting edge of network science--the relationship between network structure and system dynamics. From network robustness to the spread of disease, this section offers a potpourri of topics on this rapidly expanding frontier of the new science.
