Uppercut is about 99er Rogers being laid off from his job in LA/NYC and having his unemployment run out. He ends up moving to Mexico to make a go of it. The book includes a harrowing episode where Rogers is detained by Homeland Security at the Tijuana border for 22 hours (with good reason) while staring down a 10-year sentence and $200K fine. But Rogers is determined to leave the U.S. for a better life in Mexico, while at the same time Mexicans are crossing the border into the U.S. for their own improved shot at life. "Uppercut is the story of a bona fide writer bravely baring his soul, warts and all, enduring test after test, surviving on promises and hope, who has not only lived it, but walked-the-walk with true grit, humor, and humility. A tour-de-force memoir that is both riveting and inspiring." Sam Millar, author of On the Brinks"You're driving through the desert and you're running outta gas. That's what this book is about, man. You're on the skids with your back against the wall, but you just keep your hustle going, pushing your luck again and again." u.v.ray, author of Drug Story"Mark is a hardcore gritty writer. He king-hits your senses. No bullshit. He might give up a few jazz sentences, but that's about all, and that's when he's feeling expansive, which is very rare." Vanya Vetto, author of Garuda Travels"This gritty work is full of flashbacks and recollections (it is a memoir, after all) but, in many ways, it's about the precariousness of living in this moment...the precariousness of life, anywhere, but especially life on the edges of things, which is where Rogers seems to have spent much of his. This book, finally, is also about the precariousness of the idea of home-of an American home. The precariousness of the so-called American Dream." Steve Lambert, author of The Patron Saint of Birds"An uppercut is designed to catch a fighter off guard. It's delivered from close range, and unlike showier roundhouses and haymakers, it's known to serve up a more efficient knockout. As such, Uppercut is the perfect title for this Mark Rogers memoir. Rogers is a creative and prolific soul-a novelist, a screenwriter, a freelancer over the course of this book's story. He's also a devoted husband and a modest man looking to make ends meet as money dries up, legal issues roll in, and drama develops at the Mexican border. 'Last night I had a dream I took out the trash, ' Rogers writes. 'Who says dreams can't come true?' He's an incisive, caustic writer, but not without a sense of romanticism or hope. His story is sure to knock readers off their feet, with little chance of answering a ten count." Michael Chin, author of The Long Way Home"Mark Rogers knows that the stylish, polished picture frame in which we live is riddled with holes, in which worms live." James Sallis, author of Drive"Mark Rogers is in Mexico, and has been on a Balzacian spree these last few years, pumping out first-rate novels at the rate, it seems, of approximately two a year. I'm hooked on them." John Foy Lord author of Fun City Solitaire"Mark Rogers' memoir Uppercut is the story of one man's, one family's journey to make it through hard times on both sides of the U.S./Mexico border. Rogers is that rare prose writer who has learned the right lessons from Charles Bukowski, though stylistically this work more closely resembles that of Knut Hamsun in its honesty and emotional rawness. Rogers presents a panoramic view of an America transforming into something unrecognizable at the time of the action (2008-2015), but all too recognizable today. Ultimately this is a tale of struggle, transformation, and dare I say redemption. Well worth the read, I highly recommend getting your copy today." Danny Shot, author of WORKS

BREAKFAST SPECIAL Wanderings in Hoboken INTRODUCTION I didn't grow up in the city. I grew up in the heavily wooded suburbs of New Jersey. As a young man of 24, while studying fine arts at Ramapo College, I heard that Hoboken was on the verge of becoming an artists' community. This was in 1976. I was looking for the next step in my life and took the commuter train to Hoboken with my younger brother Rich. Hoboken was a few years from becoming anything resembling a haven for artists. It was still shaking off the racial tension of the 1960s and there was an uneasy truce in the air between all of the ethnic factions, the old timers-the Germans, Irish and Italians-the relative newcomers from Latin America, Cuba and Puerto Rico, and the blacks from the projects. It didn't take but one visit to Hoboken to get me scrambling to secure the deposit on a two bedroom apartment on Garden Street. Rich and I moved in and I set to exploring the city. It was all new to me and I began writing down things I overheard and describing things I saw. Breakfast Special isn't anything like a classic memoir - there's a lack of connective tissue. What the reader may want to keep in mind is I arrived in Hoboken broke and my first job was working as a cook at Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips, a fast food restaurant. I eventually got a job at a Barnes & Noble bookstore in Manhattan, which led to me operating an outdoor bookstand for them in Central Park. During this time, I worked hard on my artwork. I began drawing illustrations for the NY Times Book Review; my etchings were commissioned by the Pace Gallery on Manhattan's 57th Street; and some of the writings and illustrations in Breakfast Special appeared as a six-part series in the Village Voice titled City Confidential. Week by week saw writers, musicians, dancers and artists moving into Hoboken, until it actually did become a bona fide artists' community. Back in those days there seemed to be a bar on every corner in Hoboken and I probably had a drink in most of them. A thread running through all of those evenings huddled over a 35 cent glass of Rheingold was a desire for true connection with a woman

Set on the planet Equus, where the dominant species has evolved from horses instead of primates, the civilization is much like Earth, except that there is but one theocratic government. Being descended from horses, yet similar to humans in body construction, the inhabitants have the head, hands, and feet similar to horses, but only the adult males have a tail, which, like human facial hair, grows in at the onset of puberty. All tails are white, except for those who are attracted by their own sex. Their tail grows in brown.Tyler is your typical teen, but a late bloomer. When his tail starts to come in, his world is turned upside down. Through the trials that are familiar to many gay teens on Earth, he experiences just what damage religious prejudice can do, because of the mistaken notion that being same-sex oriented is a choice. Just as Tyler becomes smitten with Joey, religion clashes with science and the whole of society is rocked to the core by unspeakable violence. Will civilization survive? Self-identified Christians, by drawing parallels, should reconsider their religion-based homophobia, when true Bible scholars know that Christ said nothing of the kind.4.13.22On the planet Equus, the dominant species has evolved from horse people; the inhabitants have the head, hands, and feet similar to horses, but only the adult males have a tail, which, like human facial hair, grows in at the onset of puberty. Most tails are white, but those who are attracted to horse people of their own gender grow brown tails instead. Those horse people run into problems with the planet's theocracy-in particular, the Morality Police.Tyler Palomino is just an average teenage horse, though he's a late bloomer-still tailless at fifteen. And when his tail finally starts coming in, his world is turned upside down. Just as Tyler becomes smitten with a classmate, Joey Quarterhorse, religion clashes with science, and the whole of society is rocked to the core by unspeakable violence. Will civilization survive? In this novel, set on a world populated by horse people, a teenager just starting to understand his sexuality must deal with society's intolerance and hatred. Through the trials that will be familiar to many gay teens on Earth, Tyler experiences just what damage religious prejudice can do due to the mistaken notion that being same-sex oriented is a choice.

What drives innovation? How does it contribute to the growth of firms, industries, and economies? And do intellectual property rights help or hurt innovation and growth? Uniquely combining microeconomics, macroeconomics, and theory with empirical analysis drawn from the United States and Europe, this book introduces graduate students and advanced undergraduates to the complex process of innovation. By addressing all the major dimensions of innovation in a single text, Christine Greenhalgh and Mark Rogers are able to show how outcomes at the microlevel feed through to the macro-outcomes that in turn determine personal incomes and job opportunities. In four sections, this textbook comprehensively addresses the nature of innovation and intellectual property, the microeconomics and macroeconomics of innovation, and economic policy at the firm and macroeconomic levels. Among the topics fully explored are the role of intellectual property in creating incentives to innovate; the social returns of innovation; the creation and destruction of jobs by innovation; whether more or fewer intellectual property rights would give firms better incentives to innovate; and the contentious issues surrounding international treaties on intellectual property. Clearly organized and highly readable, the book is designed to be accessible to readers without advanced economics backgrounds. Most technical materials appear in boxed inserts and appendixes, and numerous graphs and tables elucidate abstract concepts. Provides a comprehensive overview of the economic causes and effects of innovation Covers microeconomics, macroeconomics, theoretical and empirical analysis, and policy Includes up-to-date coverage of trends and policy in intellectual property and research and development Features mathematics appendix and keywords and questions to assist learning and teaching Outline lecture slides are available online
