BENJAMIN FRANKLIN: STATESMAN, ENTREPRENEUR AND PATRIOT This book is about the life and times of Benjamin Franklin. Franklin was one of our Founding Fathers. As a founding father, Franklin contributed to the development of the United States by participating in the American Revolution, working on the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution and acting as ambassador to England and France for the American colonies. But Franklin was not just a statesman and patriot. He was a versatile entrepreneur. He had his own printing business and wrote extensively about issues of the day. He is known for many witty sayings and his book Poor Richard's Almanack is still read. He also invented many things we still use today such as bifocal lenses and experimented with electricity. Franklin also contributed to the development of cities by advocating for paving and lighting streets as well as creating firefighting clubs and police forces. Along with detailing his accomplishments, this book also discusses Franklin's love life and his family life. Franklin was not the best family man and he liked to have a good time especially with women. The book offers the reader some opinions about Franklin's legacy and the kind of man that Franklin was.
Overcome Anxiety offers an overview of the ramifications and types of anxiety, and an in-depth review of the causes and impact of anxiety. Dr. Steinberg discloses the value of conventional and innovative mental health interventions and provides the tools for evaluating treatment methods and managing expectations. Most important, this book offers effective treatment options for reducing, overcoming, enduring, and conquering this life-debilitating condition.
In fin-de-siècle and early revolutionary Russia, a group of self-educated workers produced a large body of poetry and prose in which they attempted to comprehend their rapidly changing world. Witnesses to wars and revolution, these men and women grappled on paper with the nature of civilization and the imperatives of ethical truth. In a strikingly original approach to Russian culture, Mark D. Steinberg listens to their words, which are little known today. The results of their literary creativity, he finds, were frequently not what the new Soviet order was expecting from its workers, despite its celebration of the notion of a proletarian art.
Alexander Hamilton: Founding Father is the story of one of America's great founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton. The book is a detailed account of this very important but controversial figure in American history. The story is a "classic rags to riches" one and begins with his childhood in the British West Indies. Though his life is filled with tragedy and he is very poor, Hamilton manages to distinguish himself through his writing and his business skills. Eventually, he leaves the West Indies and immigrates to North America where he receives a first rate education. Later, he becomes a hero in the Revolutionary War and is appointed to be General George Washington's right hand man. Because of his service to Washington, Hamilton becomes the Secretary of the Treasury when Washington is elected President. As a member of the new government, Hamilton makes significant contributions including setting up a banking system and a currency system which are still used today. He also plays a major role in the ratification of the United States Constitution. While Alexander Hamilton: Founding Father primarily focuses on Hamilton's great contributions, it also presents his dark side. Though Hamilton married a wealthy woman and became a member of the aristocracy, he was also involved in a scandalous affair and ultimately died in a duel defending his honor.
Liberty was not a privilege afforded to a few. It was to be extended to build a life worth living. Calamitous unrestrained 1920s big business and culture heaped intolerable conditions on the shoulders of unseen millions in the land of the free. Politics before, during and after the Great Depression tested his character, resolve and faith in acting for the sake of a common humanity. He challenged untouchables. He faced obstacles with a smile that became as famous as Shirley Temple's. He demonstrated leadership skills early on. Something would get done when circumstances demanded a firm approach delivered with fuss and feather. He responded to public scrutiny of the times. Lifelong mentors, acquaintances and publicity partners shaped him. While Herbert Hoover's and FDR's public image only tells a part of history, this book looks at how circumstances and the political realities buried the similarities in their views and defined their limits. Adaptability would become one of his greatest assets in tackling overwhelming protests when the Roaring Twenties halted turning the tide. He was in touch with the times - unwilling to sacrifice public well-being. He reassured and connected with Americans. Hollywood, his public image, industrial codes, regulations, New Deal remedies, critics and supporters magnified his firm grasp and bold direction even when some policies, in response to hysteria, didn't appeal to everyone or stand the test of time.
John Quincy Adams: the often Ignored Sixth President of the United States tracks the life and times of John Quincy Adams from boyhood until his death. John Quincy was the first case of the son of a president of the United States taking office after the father. In many ways the two President Adams were similar in temperament and in performance. Neither understood politics, neither had the common touch. Both of them were scholars, and in another era might have made a career of teaching or research. John Quincy stated in his writings that he had an ambition to be a poet - but poetry didn't pay any greater a salary back then than it does now. He is unique in that his real political career began after his term as president and while he was the elected representative of Massachusetts. Perhaps his best service to his country, however, was that of diplomat - long before he became even a Senator, let along the President of the United States. We invite you to journey with us, to learn about an intelligent, inquisitive, fun-loving boy who grew to become a taciturn, argumentative, stubborn man. He said once of himself, "I have defeated no great evil and affected little good." Was he correct? Or did he do more good than he realized? Read for yourself, and find out.
Joan of Arc--Her very name inspires a sense of heroism and bravery. But the story of one of Europe's most valiant soldiers is plagued with intrigue and deception, and the brightness of her character obscured by charges of witchcraft and more. How did a peasant girl wind up leading a revolution? How did an illiterate pen letters to the leading men of her day? How was Joan transformed from a pious farm girl to an heretical witch, and ultimately into a Christian saint and martyr? And what does her life, mission, and example have to teach us today, especially about what it means to human?
The New World. Popular conceptions of colonists in a reduced role spread. Heated debates and pamphleteers ignited the spirits of the underrepresented as various European powers involved the colonies in attempts to dominate North America. A brand of civilized order was brought to the chaos found in the colonial wilderness. Without the trouble that eighteenth century Europe faced, a new ordered world along European lines could glorify its past in bringing its best self back to life. The revolutionary generation would come to question this early colonial order. As Franklin, Washington, and Hamilton would learn, attempts to forge a unique identity would become inevitable. With it came high risks that they were reluctant to take. They would eventually help carry the New World from colonial status to confederation and ultimately a nation. Not without a fight in shedding their colonial responsibilities in favor of self-determination. Join us as we investigate what influenced these three trailblazers and what framed many debates, including the wars, the Great Awakening, the Enlightenment and rebellions. Abe's America fit a different era. How did it resemble and differ from its revolutionary birth? Did it evolve in concert with the intentions of these three founding fathers? How did he build on their enduring literature?
The Political Pope: Francis and his Fractured Church is the new book from best-selling author Mark Steinberg. Pope Francis is one of the most revered figures in the world today. His Catholic Church, rocked by scandals, is in danger of being torn apart. Sexual abuse among the clergy, mismanagement of Church funds, blackmail, and bickering have divided the Vatican and the Catholic Church from Argentina to Zaire and everywhere in between. In this deeply researched and yet still highly accessible book about the successor to Benedict XVI and Pope John Paul II, Steinburg takes us through Pope Francis's early days as a parish priest in Argentina, his Jesuit education, his role in Argentina's infamous "Dirty War," and his time as a Bishop and a Cardinal at the seat of the Catholic Church in Rome. The book climaxes with the papal election of Francis to the highest religious post in the Western world. Can the charismatic and hugely popular pope make the reforms his ailing church so desperately needs before it becomes irrelevant in the face of abuse scandals and rising public indifference to religion? Can Pope Francis re-inspire the faithful and return the Church to the glory it used to possess?
Great Minds: Isaac Newton, Nikola Tesla, and Albert Einstein Founders of the Scientific Age The last four hundred years have been some of the most incredible years in human history. From the 17th century to the 21st century, humans went from being almost universally agrarian with sailing vessels, muskets, and astrolabes being the most cutting edge technology on the planet to an era where the world is almost universally industrial or post-industrial with airplanes, cars, spaceships, computers, widespread electricity, enormous power from coal, oil, and nuclear power, and the ability to produce much more food than was ever possible before the Industrial Revolution. This book describes the lives and ideas of three of the minds who made this transition possible: Isaac Newton, Nikola Tesla, and Albert Einstein. What was it about these men that allowed them to change the world with their ideas how the universe and technology worked? In this book you will learn about how these three men were able to turn their respective worlds upside-down with their unconventional thinking, thirst for knowledge, far-reaching vision for the world, and their shear genius. They all had rather different personalities but what unites them is that they all wanted to know how the world really worked were able to train their minds to accomplish that goal. It wasn't easy for any of them and they all lived in relative isolation developing their ideas and inventions while often receiving opposition from the existing scientific, political, and cultural establishment, but in so doing they were able to transform our understanding of universe and society in a way that led to the birth of the modern scientific age. The Modern World is indebted to these men for good or ill.
