" La matinée du 10 mai 1774, à Versailles, s¿écoula dans l¿attente de l¿événement qui ne faisait doute pour personne. Louis XV, dans la nuit précédente, avait bien, il est vrai, repris un moment connaissance, mais c¿étaient ces minutes de lucidité fugitive qui précèdent parfois l¿agonie. Il était prêt d¿ailleurs, pour le redoutable passage, sa maîtresse renvoyée, les sacrements reçus, les ordres donnés, de sa bouche, pour que son petit-fils, l¿héritier de son trône, fût tenu éloigné du foyer d¿infection qüétait sa chambre de mourant. Louis-Auguste, naguère Duc de Berry, maintenant Dauphin de France, se conformait, en sujet respectueux, à cette injonction suprême. Confiné depuis l¿aube dans les appartements de la Dauphine, avec quelques personnes de sa suite ou de son service, il guettait, plein d¿angoisse, les messagers qui se succédaient d¿heure en heure. Une seule fois, dans cette matinée, il fit acte d¿autorité. Une lettre de sa main adressée à l¿abbé Terray, contrôleur général, lui prescrivait de distribuer aux pauvres de Paris une somme de 200 000 livres, afin qüils priassent pour le Roi : « Si vous trouvez, ajoutait-il, que ce soit trop, vu les besoins de l¿État, vous les retiendrez sur ma pension et sur celle de Madame la Dauphine. » Cet ordre et les termes de ce billet, connus et publiés sur l¿heure, excitaient déjà de toutes parts un attendrissement général."
