"Variety's the very spice of life that gives it all its flavour." (William Cowper, 1731-1800) Maurice Taylor was born in 1926 in Hamilton, Scotland, and after military service, was ordained to the Catholic priesthood in 1950. He became bishop of Galloway in 1981, and retired in 2004. He has served as a priest in the diocese of Motherwell, as a seminary lecturer at St Peter's College, Cardross, and as rector of the Royal Scots College in Valladolid, Spain. Bishop Taylor has made many visits to Central America, especially El Salvador and Guatemala; visits that have taught him so much about those lands and their peoples; friendly, welcoming, beautiful yet, in so many cases, impoverished, oppressed and persecuted. Two of these visits are described in detail. This book also includes his early memories of the Church's liturgy, a review of the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, a frank portrait of the diocese of Galloway and the author's observations following many visits to the Holy Land.
Ripon's story comes alive on this tour around the city. Evidence of life here hundreds of millions of years ago, with 'Ripon' at the edge of a tropical sea, can be observed at Quarry Moor; bronze age henges are to be found to the north and east of the city; Celts and Anglo-Saxons settled between the rivers. The King of Northumbria granted land for the establishment of a monastery in the seventh century and the famous St Wilfrid's monastery acquired international renown. As a result, the church gained control of thousands of acres of land, with the grant of a judicial franchise or liberty that lasted to the sixteenth-century Reformation. These influences are all to be seen. Like many historic market towns, Ripon owes much of its street pattern, its local government, its economic development and some would say its problems to earlier times. This book will help draw them out for you.
