Max Regers Bachrezeption beschränkte sich nicht auf die Orgel und das Orchester. Wie Bach wollte Reger Sonaten und Suiten für ein Streichinstrument solo verfassen, die nicht bloße Übungsstücke, sondern ein kompositorisches Kompendium darstellen. Die drei Suiten für Viola solo op. 131d zählen dazu. Reger veröffentlichte sie in seinen letzten Lebensjahren 1914/1915 zusammen mit Sechs Präludien und Fugen für Violine solo, Drei Duos im alten Stil für zwei Violinen sowie Drei Suiten für Violoncello solo und fasste alle Werke mit der Opuszahl 131 zusammen. Die vorliegende Urtextausgabe der Suiten für Viola solo op. 131d basiert auf dem Erstdruck von 1916, der auf Grundlage des mittlerweile verschollenen Manuskriptes erstellt wurde. Der Herausgeber erläutert mittels Vorwort und Kritischem Bericht alle Abweichungen dieser Ausgabe vom Erstdruck.
