The pandemic has faced the scientific community with several serious hurdles. At the same time, this provided potential for new scientific pursuits, particularly in biotechnology. We have now begun to reap the benefits of the many scientific and medical advances accomplished in the last decade as a society. Advances in genomics, proteomics, and DNA sequencing technologies have permitted a more informed and tailored approach to medication design.India is ranked third in Asia and among the top 12 biotech destinations in the world. Because of rising economic prosperity, increased health consciousness, and a billion-plus population base, the Indian biotech industry is expected to grow significantly. The development of indigenous technologies/solutions of the Country is aiming at cost-effective and meet global standards of quality. The Indian start-up environment provides a unique opportunity to develop frugal innovative products. Unmet demands can be addressed with internationally competitive products and platform technologies. India has the potential to become a major biomanufacturing powerhouse.
Costus Pictus is a recently introduced plant from Mexico has shown its potential as herbal drug for diabetes. In the present study different solvents acetone, hexane, hot water extracts were prepared from leaves and they were subjected to phytochemical screening, and antioxidant studies. Phytochemical analysis in different solvent leaf extracts of C. Pictus inferred it was a good source of multiple phytoconstituents. The preliminary phytochemical tests indicated the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, saponins, tannins, phytosterols, phenolics and carbohydrates in various extracts of leaves of C. Pictus. Total phenolics, tannins and flavonoid contents were analyzed in successively extracted leaf sample. In vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated by chemical assays, such as DPPH, ABTS, ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), phosphomolybdenum reduction assay, superoxide anion radical scavenging, hydroxyl radical scavenging and metal chelating activity. The acetone leaf extract revealed the highest total phenolics, total tanninand flavonoid contents.
