The American wife of a Russian ballet master living in the United States is found murdered on the property of the city's wealthiest citizen. Was she killed because of the dashed hopes of the Russian, by his Russian ex-wife, by Soviet agents, or are the wealthy couple somehow involved? Will Angi Masters be able to bring the killer to justice amid the intrigue of international relations during the decline of the Soviet Union and the specter of local politics?
(This is a major revision of the book "Retribution" released in 2012. Some minor characters have been removed and scenes have been resequenced, but the storyline remains the same.) The peace of a Santa Rosa neighborhood is shattered by the brutal murder of a woman and the kidnapping of her two young daughters. There is no apparent motive for the crime and no ransom demand, but the evidence suggests a personal connection. Detective Angela Masters is assigned to the case, and it becomes apparent early on that the killer no longer has custody of the kidnapped girls. Even when the killer is captured in another state, there is no clue to the whereabouts of the girls and concern for their welfare mounts. Angi's concerns are heightened when she learns that the killer might be released prematurely on the other state's charges and she still doesn't have a solid case against him. Adding to her worries is the possibility that the killer, once free, might see the girls as a liability and murder them, if indeed he, or someone else hasn't already done so. Can Angi locate the girls, and find the critical missing pieces of the puzzle to put the killer away before other innocent people suffer?
Late one night, a resident of Santa Rosa reports that someone was banging on his front door and screaming for help. A raging fire which threatens homes and an armed robbery stretch police resources. Officers do not respond to the neighborhood until the following morning, when the resident calls again to report a horrific discovery. In the neighborhood, police find blood in several locations and what appears to be a gruesome crime scene. But there is no body and no evidence of the means of injury. When the victim's body is located a few days later, identification is hampered. Angela Masters must sort out a mound of conflicting information to determine who the victim was and to identify her killer. By the time the victim is identified, evidence points to a serial killer preying on young girls. Will Angi be able to sort out the puzzle and, even then, will it lead her to the killer before he can strike again?
A young couple have what seems to be a comfortable life until one day when the husband returns home from work to find his wife brutally murdered in their apartment. Police find no signs of a break-in and the husband assures investigators that his wife was extremely cautious about home security. She wouldn't open the door to someone she didn't know. Witnesses report an unknown man in the area but efforts to locate him are frustrated. The case goes cold until a year later when another woman is similarly attacked and new information causes Detective Angela Masters to re-examine old theories. The pressure is on for her to locate the killer before he can strike again.
A young woman is reported missing. Her car has been abandoned on a major highway and the interior is in disarray. However, there is no evidence that a crime has occurred and adults are free to 'disappear' if they choose. Still, Detective Angela Masters believes the woman may have been kidnapped. There is no ransom demand but also no indicator that the woman may be living somewhere else. Angela Masters must determine if a crime has even occurred and try to locate the missing woman. If her disappearance was the result of criminal activity, who was responsible and can she make a case that will hold up in court? "Entitlement" is filled with twists, dead ends and clashing egos that will keep the reader engrossed as the case nears a conclusion.
