La guerra tra l'imperatore et il re di Francia non durò longamente; perché Cesare conobbe chiaro che, restando egli in quella implicato et il fratello in quella contra turchi, la Germania s'avvanzava tanto nella libertà, che in breve manco il nome imperiale sarebbe stato riconosciuto, e che egli, facendo guerra in Francia, immitava il cane d'Esopo che, seguendo l'ombra, perdette e quella et il corpo; onde diede orecchie alle proposte de' francesi per fare la pace, con dissegno non solo di liberarsi da quello impedimento, ma anco, col mezo del re, accommodare le cose con turchi et attendere alla Germania.

Io non sono ignaro delle leggi dell'istoria, in che quella sia differente dagli annali e da' diarii. So ancora che genera sacietà nello scrittore, e nel lettore tedio la narrazione di accidenti uniformi, e che raccontare minuzie troppo particolari merita nome d'imprudente sacentaria; nondimeno osservo di frequenti repliche e minute narrazioni in Omero, e che nell'espedizione di Ciro minore Senofonte piú rapisce l'animo e piú insegna raccontando i raggionamenti serii e giocosi de' soldati, che le azzioni e consegli de' prencipi. E vengo in opinione che a ciascuna materia convenga la propria e singolar forma, e che questa mia non possi esser formata con le ordinarie regole.

Il proponimento mio è di scrivere l'istoria del concilio tridentino, perché, quantonque molti celebri istorici del secol nostro nelli loro scritti n'abbiano toccato qualche particolar successo, e Giovanni Sleidano, diligentissimo autore, abbia con esquisita diligenza narrate le cause antecedenti, nondimeno, poste tutte queste cose insieme, non sarebbono bastanti ad un'intiera narrazione. Io subito ch'ebbi gusto delle cose umane, fui preso da gran curiosità di saperne l'intiero, e dopo, l'aver letto con diligenza quello che trovai scritto e li publici documenti usciti in stampa o divulgati a penna, mi diedi a ricercar nelle reliquie de' scritti de...

I legati, conforme a quello che il pontefice ultimamente commandato aveva, a' 15 di genaro fecero una congregazione generale, nella quale il cardinale di Mantova, come primo legato, ebbe un conveniente raggionamento della necessità et opportunità d'aprire il concilio, essortò tutti i prelati ad aiutare cosí santa e pia opera con digiuni, limosine e frequenti celebrazioni di messe. Dopo fu letta la bolla della legazione, data sotto il dí 10 marzo precedente, la qual era in termini generali con le solite clausule, che gli mandava come angeli di pace per preseder al concilio convocato e che doveva aver principio alle feste di risurrezione.

Il pontefice, per la dissoluzione del concilio liberato da molti pensieri, riputò bene prevenire le occasioni che potessero farlo ricader di nuovo, e propose in concistorio la necessità di riformare la Chiesa: che per questo effetto aveva ridotto il concilio a Trento il quale non avendo portato il fine da lui desiderato per gl'accidenti della guerra, prima d'Italia, e poi anco di Germania, giusta cosa era far in Roma quello che in Trento non s'era potuto. Ordinò per tanto una congregazione numerosa de cardinali e prelati che attendessero all'opera. Dell'averne eletto molti, egli allegava la causa, acciò le risoluzioni passassero con maturità et avessero riputazione maggiore;

Arrivò in Trento il cardinal Morone dalla legazione sua d'Ispruc il 17 maggio et immediate s'incomminciò a trattare tra li legati del giorno della sessione, essendo vicino il 20, quando si doveva determinare; e non avendo ancora, né sapendo quando si potessero aver le materie in ordine, il giorno 19 nella congregazione fu prorogato il termine sino a 10 di giugno, per determinare allora il giorno prefisso. In quella congregazione due cose notabili successero. L'una fu la contenzione se apparteneva a' legati overo al concilio il deliberare se li procuratori de' vescovi dovevano esser admessi in congregazione, come detto abbiamo che da Lansac fu ricercato.

È costume di chi scrive istoria nel principio proponer il modello della trattazione; nondimeno io ho stimato ben differirlo a questo passo, facendolo ritratto delle cose narrate [e] dissegno di quelle che sono per raccontare. Avendo deliberato alle memorie da me raccolte dar qualche forma che non superasse la facoltà mia e fosse piú accommodata alla materia, ebbi considerazione che, fra tutti i maneggi in questo secolo tra cristiani occorsi, e forse anco in quelli che negl'anni rimanenti occorreranno, questo tiene il primo luogo, e che, delle cose riputate il piú degl'uomini sentono beneficio e piacere d'intenderne le minuzie: perciò giudicai convenirgli la forma di diario.
