  • - A PLAY IN POETRY & FIRST LOVE STORY & OTHER POEMS: 'Love, is its own reason for being' Meher Baba.

LOVE: A PLAY IN POETRY & FIRST LOVE STORY & OTHER POEMS by Paul Smith. From the Introduction: The history of Love has been written by few historians - why is that? Because love cannot be pinpointed to a time and place... because, it is in all times and all places. It is responsible for every sequence of events - it is also beyond all that, as a matter of fact, events are the responsibility of love, they are the tools with which love works: 'Love, is its own reason for being' Meher Baba. Love's game is so simple, yet... seemingly so complicated. Love complicates events to make the game more worthwhile. The objective of the game is reunion. "There is an extremely powerful force that, so far, science has not found a formal explanation to. It is a force that includes and governs all others, and is even behind any phenomenon operating in the universe and has not yet been identified by us. This universal force is... love." Albert Einstein. 119 enlightening pages! Large Print (16pt) & Large Format (8" x 10") Paperback. Comments on Paul Smith's Translation of Hafiz's 'Divan'. Ghazals Inspired by the Poems of Huma (Meher Baba), Hafiz & other Sufi Master Poets by Paul Smith In 1974 Australian poet Paul Smith began a 12 year journey translating his acclaimed Divan of Hafiz (many 'greats' say the world's finest poet). To do this he had to learn the ancient form of the ghazal in which Hafiz was considered the 'Master'. So, for the first time in the English language he composed real ghazals and would continue to do so for the following forty years, inspired by his Spiritual Master Meher Baba (Huma) and Hafiz and many great poets of this form that he would put into beautiful correct rhyming English... including Sadi, Rumi, 'Attar, Amir Khusrau, Makhfi and about 60 others... all great poets of this wonderful, mystical, most ancient and most difficult form of poetry. He would even create a number of books of anthologies of the ghazal from Adam to the latest. Introduction on his life & that of Huma & Hafiz and a chapter on the ghazal. 805 pages. • - A Novel of War & Peace Based on a True Story
    af Paul Smith

GOING BACK A Novel of War & Peace Based on a True Story Paul Smith GOING BACK is a novel inspired by a true story of love, courage and determination set in a land at peace, Australia; and a land at war... Cambodia. It is the story of people made into refugees by war: the orphans, the old, the young and those who have lost everything and the effect that deadly landmines often have on them. It is the story of the few from America and Australia who stand up to help and love and befriend and help them. But it is mostly the amazing true story of one man who rises out of the depth of despair and through a stroke of good fortune sets off on an odyssey into a living hell and by his inventiveness and sense of humour many lives are saved and changed. Unlike other stories set in Vietnam and Cambodia that tell of war from the soldiers point of view, GOING BACK tells the tale of an ordinary man and people who act extraordinarily in the worst kinds of situations. It is a story from the recent past that could have been ripped from the headlines of today and probably tomorrow. It is an important story, a sad, funny, weird, fantastic, awful, heroic story of war and love and peace and friendship that had to be told. 173 pages. COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'."It is not a joke... the English version of ALL the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. I am astonished." THREE SUFI-MARTYR POETS OF INDIA Sarmad, Dara Shikoh & Makhfi Translations & Introductions Paul Smith SARMAD (d. 1659). Sarmad whose name derives from the Persian word for eternal or everlasting, was a dervish poet of Jewish and Armenian origin who settled in India. He wandered the streets and the courts completely naked and was close to Prince Dara Shikoh. During his life he produced a translation of the Torah in Persian. Finally he was beheaded in 1659 by Aurangzeb for his perceived heretical Sufi poetry. DARA SHIKOH (1615-1659) was the oldest son of Emperor Shah Jahan. He was a fine poet, his poems having the influence of Sufism to which he was dedicated. His Divan of ghazals, ruba'is and qasidas was not the only work he left behind; his five prose works on Sufism and Indian mysticism are popular even today. He was defeated leading an uprising against Aurangzeb and beheaded. MAKHFI (1639-1702). Princess Zeb-un-Nissa, (pen-name 'Makhfi') was the oldest daughter of Aurangzeb. She revealed great intelligence from an early age. She never married and was imprisoned by her father for years for being involved in a plot with her brother to unseat him and for her Sufi beliefs. She was tortured and died in prison. The rhyme-structure and meaning of these remarkable ruba'is & ghazals of these poets has been kept. Rabi'a of Basra & Mansur Hallaj Selected Poems Translation & Introduction Paul Smith RABI'A OF BASRA (717-801). Her Spiritual Master was Hazrat Hassan Basri. Throughout her life, her Love of God, poverty and self-denial did not waver. As her fame grew she had many disciples. She also had discussions with many of the renowned religious people of her time. More interesting than her absolute asceticism, however, is the actual concept of Divine Love that Rabi'a introduced. She was the first to introduce the idea that God should be loved for God's own sake. She is widely considered to be the most important of the early Sufi poets. She was the first in a long line of female Sufi mystics. MANSUR HALLAJ (859-922). He was a Perfect Master and a poet who born near Shiraz, Persia... a writer and teacher of Sufism most famous for his self-proclaimed divinity in his poetry and for his execution for heresy. Although Hallaj was born in Persia he wrote all of his works in Arabic. His influence on all Sufis, be they poets or not, who have come after him, cannot be overestimated. CAT & MOUSE, FISH, MOTH & SPIDER Four Fables in Persian Sufi Poetry Obeyd Zakani, Shah Da'i, Kasim Anvar & Parvin Etesami Translation & Introduction Paul Smith 'Fable of Mouse & Cat' by Obeyd Zakani is a satirical, epic allegory that was influential at the time it was composed (14th c.) and has remained so for the past 600 years. It is more than just a story for children (that some say brought about the cartoon of Tom & Jerry)... it is a story of the stupidity of the false power of those in power and a warning to all that such blind ambition always leads to destruction at the hands of one even more powerful. Sufi poet Shah Da'i (1406-1464) takes his clue from 'Attar and tells the marvellous allegory of the fish who go in search of an answer to their problem from the Ancient Wise Fish. Kasim Anvar (1356-1433) edited Hafiz's Divan and knew Shah Da'i in Shiraz. His 'Fable of the Moth', like the previous two masnavi poems contains much Sufi wisdom in like the poem by Shah Da'i it is an allegory of the lover's search for the Beloved. Iran's recent great female poet Parvin Etesami (1907-1941) tells the simple but deep allegory of the lazy man and the hard-working spider in such a clever and engrossing way that her reason for telling it is subtle but truly enlightening. Introduction on the Lives, Times & Poetry of each poet. The correct rhymes and meaning are achieved. Illustrated. Large Format Paperback 7" x 10" 199 pages. THE GREAT URDU POET MOMIN: SELECTED POEMS (Large Print & Large Format Edition) Translation & Introduction Paul Smith. With Ghalib and Zauq, Momin Khan Momin (1801-1852) was one of the three great poets of Delhi and his poetry was loved by the common people. The main theme in his poetry is love, in the physical sense and the human sense... earthly and real. He belonged to a family of doctors and was tall and handsome and was also a physician who was also interested in astrology, playing chess and music. Mir was one of his teachers in the art of poetry. He composed seven long masnavi poems and hundreds of ghazals and ruba'is and also composed elegies on the deaths of his many mistresses. He wrote not only in Urdu, but in Persian and Arabic which he knew perfectly. Momin was essentially a poet of the earthly love which he expressed best in the form of ghazal. In celebrating romantic love in all its manifestations, he drew upon the purity of diction, deeply nuanced phrases, and indirect modes of expression. All these made way, sometimes, for a metaphysical apprehension of the phenomenon of love and the figure of the lover (Sufism). He fell from a roof and was badly injured and using astrology predicated his own death. This is the only translation of ghazals & ruba'is and it has the correct rhyme structure of the originals. Introduction on the Urdu Language, Urdu Poetry, Life & Times & Poetry and on the ghazal. A Selected Bibliography. Large Print (16pt) Large Format ('7 x'10) Edition 120 pages. BALL & POLO STICK OR BOOK OF ECSTASY BY 'ARIFI. Translation & Introduction Paul Smith. Written by Maulana Mahmud 'Arifi (1389 - 1449) one of the last great Sufi poets of the Classical Period of Persian Poetry the Hal-nama or 'Book of Ecstasy' often referred to as 'The Ball & Polo-stick' an allegory in which the ball and the polo-stick are personified as types of Sufi mystical love and all the images are from the game of polo or as it was known at the time in Persia as chaugan. 'Arifi composed it, as he states in the epilogue of the 513 couplets masnavi... in two weeks in 1439 when he was fifty. In their introduction to their excellent literal translation of this poem Wheeler M. Thackston, Jr. and Hossein Ziai state: 'The underlying theme of 'Arifi's work is self-sacrificing love, a conceptualization that was derived from the Sufi ideal of love, this love not only by definition is unrequited but also demands the ultimate death of the lover. In terms of mystical speculative philosophy, the "death" of the lover is the annihilation of selfhood and self-awareness, or ego-consciousness, or, in other terms, the total absorption of the lover's own consciousness of self into that of the beloved. On the purely mystical level, this represents the annihilation of the individual soul, the lover, into the godhead, the beloved.' This is the first translation in the poetic form of the masnavi. The Introduction contains chapters on The Life & Times of 'Arifi, The Game of Polo, Polo in Persian & Sufi Poetry, The Masnavi in Persian Poetry and a Selected Bibliography. IQBAL: LIFE & POEMS Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Muhammad Iqbal (1873-1938) was born in Sialkot, Punjab. He graduated from Government College, Lahore with a master's degree in philosophy. He taught there while he established his reputation as an Urdu poet. During this period his poetry expressed an ardent Indian nationalism, but a marked change came over his views when he was studying for his doctorate at Cambridge, visiting German universities and qualifying as a barrister. He turned to Islam and Sufism for inspiration and rejected nationalism as a disease of the West. These ideas found expression in his long poems written in Persian. In his final years he returned to Urdu as his medium with ghazals inspired by his Sufism. Here is a collection of his Sufi ruba'is, ghazals, masnavis & a nazm. GREAT POET-SAINTS OF MAHARASHTRA, INDIA: Selected Poems. Translation & Introduction Paul Smith. From the 13th to the 17th century the state of Maharashtra in India gave birth to a number of great Poet-Saints whose lives and poetry is loved today as much as it was when they lived their lives of selfless devotion and praise of the Divine Beloved. They composed their poems in slokas and abhangs that are here in the correct form and meaning, with biographies and bibliographies. Janabai (1263-1350) was born to a couple from the lowest caste. She worked as a maidservant for the father of the Poet-Saint Namdev who she cared for throughout her life. Her poetry is replete with her love for God. Namdev (1270-1350) was born in Narasi-Bamani. Soon his family moved to Pandharpur where the temple of Lord Vithoba (Krishna as a boy) is located. He spent most his life there. He composed 2500 abhangs in Marathi. Dnyaneshwar (1275-1296) emerged as one the first original Poet-Saints to write in Marathi. He liberated 'divine knowledge' locked in Sanskrit to bring it into Marathi. At the age of 21 he entered into Sanjeevan Samadhi at Alandi. Eknath (1533-1599) was a saint, scholar and poet. He is seen as a bridge between Dnyaneshwar and Namdev and Tukaram and Ramdas. Tukaram (1608-1654) was a prominent Poet-Saint during the Bhakti movement in India and is still greatly loved. Ramdas (1627-1682) was a Marathi Poet-Saint and a devotee of Lord Rama. Bahina Bai (1628-1700) was a disciple of Tukaram. Apart from her unique autobiography in verse she composed abhangs that deal with various subjects. The original rhyme-structures have been kept in each translation. Large Print (16pt) & Large Format (8" x 10") Edition. Pages 191. Comments on Paul Smith's Translation of Hafiz's 'Divan'.
