A unique effort in the CHINESE LEARNING SERIES is the strong push on developing student's reading comprehension in Chinese, although high quality education on other skills are also provided in high standard, e.g. verbal communication and writing. Reading comprehension is known as one of the most challenging bottlenecks in Chinese education as a second language. The best practices to be incorporated in our program are based on 1) modern second language education theories; 2) maximum language input; and 3) student centric curriculum, instruction and assessment. CHINESE LEARNING SERIES adopts a "maximum acquisition" methodology, which is designed based on Stephen Krashen's "Input Hypothesis," pedagogy and educational psychology. Basically, CHINESE LEARNING SERIES students acquire Chinese in a natural order by receiving comprehensible and constructional verse input from classical poems. Multimedia tools are incorporated in CHINESE LEARNING SERIES, e.g. pictures, animation, software and character cards that help students memorize and reflect the Chinese characters that they learnt. Students maximize their language input utilizing poems, animation, games and other effective and interactive means in classroom and at home. Students learn while "playing." CHINESE LEARNING SERIES teaching and practice materials are easy to follow and fun to use. It has been proven highly effective to have young children reading and reciting famous poems during the past two years. It helps to develop and establish student's Chinese language sense. "Recitation" not only overcomes the learner's anxiety of "foreign language," but also turns tacit knowledge into explicit language. The repetition rate in CHINESE LEARNING SERIES is determined based on the laws of forgetting rate in human, e.g. the contents need to be repeated 6 times at different time points to ensure the students memorizing what they learned. Exercises and reviews after school are weighed equally important as what they learned in class. The CHINESE LEARNING SERIES development team has put in substantial efforts in designing student homework exercise materials, which include the use of multimedia CD with sound, animation, games and other interactive exercises, the word cards and reading exercises on paper. In general, all contents will be reviewed 6 times in different ways in six months so that the students can achieve a permanent memory. We also ask students to listen stories we provide to them at least twice a week. Listening is an important component in building language senses. During the entire six-year CHINESE LEARNING SERIES instruction, the development of reading comprehension progresses following the order of "listening to read," "semi-independent reading" and "independent reading." Advanced Structural Textile Composites Forming: Characterization, Modeling, and Simulation comprehensively describes the influence of fiber/fabric architectures and properties on composites forming, along with their deformability and structural optimization, covering the latest advances in the composites forming field. Part one reviews textile reinforcement architectures and discusses the forming behaviors of important 2D and 3D fabrics. Part two discusses numerical models to conduct simulation analysis of different structural composites forming at mesoscopic and macroscopic scales, in particular, 3D preforms with through-the-thickness yarns. Part three looks at the latest developments in the relationship between forming and other steps in composite manufacturing, such as resin injection, and automated fiber placement (AFP) and the effects on certain mechanical properties, such as structural damage and impact resistance. The book will be an essential reference for academic researchers, industrial engineers and materials scientists working with the manufacture and design of fiber-reinforced composite materials.

It was my greatest pleasure to read the whole manuscript of Well-known Chinese Reading Study compiled by Mr. Peter Wang and his academic team. I am very proud for their seriousness of attitude, the high standard of their professionalism, the deepness of their profound Chinese language knowledge and the excellence of the exercises fabricated in the books. It is undoubtedly a vast amount of work from collecting materials, selecting content in organizing and compiling the whole series of the books. These informative and all-embracing series of books demonstrate the profound and diversified Chinese culture with five thousand years of accumulation to all the people abroad. Although Mr. Peter Wang has been in foreign country for a long time, he, however, never forgets to carry forward the culture of his motherland. He believes it is his obligatory responsibility to compile and publish a series of books which could introduce and demonstrate the Chinese history, society and culture to the whole world. The Chinese language learning materials selected in the books has fully displayed the Chinese culture for the offspring of overseas Chinese and foreign friends who hope to understand and master the Chinese culture. Well-known Chinese Reading Study includes eight parts: Chinese classical philosophy, Chinese classical military, the culture of Chinese medicine, the culture of Chinese food, Chinese poets, books and painting, Chinese garden art and architecture, Chinese folk arts and Chinese martial arts. It introduces the origination, evolution and development of the four modern industrial revolutions. At the same time, it also includes 3000 exercise learning of accurate literacy and interesting idioms. This book discusses multiple key elements of the overseas Chinese language education for overseas children system, for example, organizational managements of Chinese schools, history, how to evaluate teaching materials, and methodologies. Around the world, there are two most challenging areas in overseas Chinese education, i.e. the selections of teaching materials and teaching methods. Most chapters in this book provide focused discussions based on firsthand experience in classroom teaching in Chinese schools, analysis of observations, extraction of data and theoretical analysis. It highlights and promotes innovations in advancing teaching materials and methods, especially for the overseas Chinese language education system. The book provides practical, short and enlightening chapters, for teachers, colleagues, overseas Chinese community, and Chinese school managers. It aims for further advancing the special field of overseas Chinese language education. More information is at http: //gwcs-md.org

During the entire six-year CHINESE LEARNING SERIES instruction, the development of reading comprehension progresses following the order of "listening to read," "semi-independent reading" and "independent reading."
Visual Question Answering (VQA) usually combines visual inputs like image and video with a natural language question concerning the input and generates a natural language answer as the output. This is by nature a multi-disciplinary research problem, involving computer vision (CV), natural language processing (NLP), knowledge representation and reasoning (KR), etc.Further, VQA is an ambitious undertaking, as it must overcome the challenges of general image understanding and the question-answering task, as well as the difficulties entailed by using large-scale databases with mixed-quality inputs. However, with the advent of deep learning (DL) and driven by the existence of advanced techniques in both CV and NLP and the availability of relevant large-scale datasets, we have recently seen enormous strides in VQA, with more systems and promising results emerging. This book provides a comprehensive overview of VQA, covering fundamental theories, models, datasets, and promising future directions. Given its scope, it can be used as a textbook on computer vision and natural language processing, especially for researchers and students in the area of visual question answering. It also highlights the key models used in VQA.

Despite the fact that nanotechnology has been present for a few decades, there is a big gap between how nanotechnology is perceived and what nanotechnology can truly offer in all sectors of water. The question to be answered is 'what more can we expect from nanotechnology' in the water field? The rational nano-design starts with well-defined problem definitions, necessitates interdisciplinary approaches, involves 'think-outside-the-box', and represents the future growth point of environmental nanotechnology. However, it is still largely new to the educated public and even scientists and engineers in water fields. Therefore, it is the purpose of this book to promote the concept of rational nano-design and to demonstrate its creativity, innovation, and excitement. This book presents a series of carefully selected rationally designed nano- materials/devices/surfaces, which represent drastically different, ground-breaking, and eye-opening approaches to conventional problems to embody the concept of nano-design and to illustrate its remarkable potential to change the face of the research in water industry in the future. Each of the book contributors is world-renowned expert in the burgeoning field of rational nano-design for applications. Rational Design of Next-generation Nanomaterials and Nanodevices for Water Applications is intended for undergraduates, graduates, scientists and professionals in the fields of environmental science, material science, chemistry, and chemistry engineering. It provides coherent and good material for teaching, research, and professional reference. Contents: Introduction to rational nano-design for water applications; Rational design of smart materials/surfaces with switchable oil wettability for sustainable oil-spill cleanup; Rational design of three-dimensional macroscale porous electrodes for bioelectrochemical systems; Design of (photo)electrochemical active membranes as next-generation filtration devices; Hierarchical materials as a design concept for multifunctional membranes; Rational design of functional nanoporous materials to confine water pollutant in controlled nano-space; A next-generation forward osmosis draw solution design; Rational design of magnetic permanently-confined micelle arrays (Mag-PCMAs) materials for sustainable water and soil remediation; Rational design of an all-in-one lab-on-chip device for direct seawater desalination; Design of micro-sized microbial fuel cells as miniature energy harvesters Author: Peng Wang, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology
