The dimensions of time and space fundamentally cause and shape the variability of all human language. To reduce investigation of this insight to manageable proportions, researchers have traditionally concentrated on the "deepest" dialects. But it is increasingly apparent that, although most people still speak with a distinct regional coloring, the new mobility of speakers in recently industrialized and postindustrial societies and the efflorescence of communication technologies cannot be ignored. This has given rise to a reconsideration of the relationship between geographical place and cultural space, and the fundamental link between language and a spatially bounded territory. Language and Space: An International Handbook of Linguistic Variation seeks to take full account of these developments in a comprehensive, theoretically rich way. The introductory volume examines the concept of space and linguistic approaches to it, the structure and dynamics of language spaces, and relevant research methods. Die Schriftenreihe linguae & litterae, herausgegeben von Peter Auer, Gesa von Essen und Werner Frick, dokumentiert die wissenschaftlichen Aktivitaten der School of Language and Literature des Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) im Bereich einer theoretisch und methodisch avancierten, interdisziplinar geoffneten Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft. In der Linguistik liegt der Akzent auf der korpusbasierten, quantitativen und qualitativen Erforschung von Sprache, in der Literaturwissenschaft auf der komparatistisch-transdisziplinaren Analyse literarischer Phanomene in ihren kulturellen Kontexten. Zugleich nimmt die Reihe die produktiven Kontakt- und Synergiezonen zwischen moderner Linguistik und Literaturwissenschaft (und den mit ihnen im Austausch stehenden Geistes-, Sozial- und Naturwissenschaften) in den Blick und sucht nach neuen, fur die zeitgemae Reformulierung des humanwissenschaftlichen Forschungscurriculums richtungsweisenden Fragestellungen und Konzepten. Die internationale Ausrichtung der Reihe findet ihren Ausdruck in der konsequenten Mehrsprachigkeit der Bande, in denen deutsch-, englisch- und franzosischsprachige Beitrage, ggf. auch Artikel in italienischer und spanischer Sprache erscheinen. Jeder Einzelband wird im Rahmen eines peer-review-Verfahrens durch ein international besetztes Editorial Board begutachtet. Pro Jahr erscheinen 2-4 Bande.

This volume contains papers presented at the Eighteenth Annual Conference on Learning Theory (previously known as the Conference on Computational Learning Theory) held in Bertinoro, Italy from June 27 to 30, 2005. The technical program contained 45 papers selected from 120 submissions, 3 open problems selected from among 5 contributed, and 2 invited lectures. The invited lectures were given by Sergiu Hart on "e;Uncoupled Dynamics and Nash Equilibrium"e;, and by Satinder Singh on "e;Rethinking State, Action, and Reward in Reinforcement Learning"e;. These papers were not included in this volume. The Mark Fulk Award is presented annually for the best paper co-authored by a student. The student selected this year was Hadi Salmasian for the paper titled "e;The Spectral Method for General Mixture Models"e; co-authored with Ravindran Kannan and Santosh Vempala. The number of papers submitted to COLT this year was exceptionally high. In addition to the classical COLT topics, we found an increase in the number of submissions related to novel classi?cation scenarios such as ranking. This - crease re?ects a healthy shift towards more structured classi?cation problems, which are becoming increasingly relevant to practitioners.
