Book 3 in my football series is very different from the first two books, The Winning Touch and The Winning Tackle, in that it is more concerned with growing up, relationships and rites of passage, although the football detail remains important. For this "Mega-Compendium", I have added 5 new stories to the 10 already published. In the new stories, Firewoman Sam is invited to tour fire-fighting associations in Asia. For the first time, all the Firewoman Sam stories are available together on Kindle and in print. There are no pictures and they are intended to be read aloud at bedtime. The stories, which develop and mature, are aimed at kids aged 4-10. Although they are light in tone, they do not avoid serious issues. I hope they will help with verbal skills and will encourage both a discussion of the issues as well as an active imagination. Firewoman Sam is a fearless, feminist fire-fighter who believes that women are just as brave as men. She saves little girls from drowning, puts out fires and rescues grannies stuck in trees.

For the first time, the seven Firewoman Sam stories which have already been published on Kindle are available in printed form (I have made some minor changes). Firewoman Sam rescues kites, cats, a little girl and a pink penguin. As a feminist heroine, she fights fires and prejudice but becoming famous also leads to problems. I have rounded these off with three new stories which describe Sam's search for true love and happiness. They also answer the mystery of what happened to the little girl's dad after the first story. They are intended to be read aloud at bedtime. As they sometimes deal with serious issues, I hope they won't lead to sleepless nights. I think the stories develop and mature as the little girl grows up. So, they start off young (4-5?) and end up at about 10. I hope the stories will help with verbal skills and will encourage both a discussion of the issues as well as an active imagination.

I've revised and updated the first edition to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Tiananmen Square, the bleeding heart of the nation. I concentrate on the period from the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976 to the massacre in 1989. Instead of a dull, factual historical account, I try to present the atmosphere and colour of Chinese daily life, from early morning tai chi and dim sum to Cantonese opera, snake dinners and ox penis soup. However, I don't gloss over the seamy side: forbidden love, false arrests, forced abortions and public executions. China is presented in all its bewildering complexity -- not only the "Chinese Dream" but also the "Chinese Nightmare". Just what is myth and what is reality?

Also, can Morose solve the curious incident of the wolf which did not howl in the night? This monograph is a revised, expanded and updated version of a series of lectures which I gave to Chinese students at Sun Yatsen University (Guangzhou) in which I tried to explain modern literature to students with very little background in post-1945 Western literary developments. I use the theoretical debate between Brecht and Lukács on Expressionism as my starting point for examining the differences between Realism and Modernism in British literature during the 1950s. This period was important for the emergence of a genuine working-class culture: the "Angry Young Man", "kitchen-sink drama", strong regional accents and dialects, new gritty cinema and powerful actors like Albert Finney, the son of a northern bookie. I analyse in detail six significant British dramas and six major novels by leading writers like Osborne, Wesker, Pinter, Barstow, Sillitoe and Golding. This book should appeal to anyone interested in literary history and literary theory.
