Je n'ai lu de M. Gogol que les trois ouvrages dont je viens de transcrire les titres, c'est-à-dire un recueil de nouvelles, un roman et une comédie. Je crois qu'il a encore publié des lettres, qui ont fait sensation dans son pays, sur des sujets philosophiques et religieux. Mon incompétence en ces matières me fait moins regretter de ne pouvoir en rendre compte. D'ailleurs, comme romancier et comme auteur dramatique, M. Gogol me paraît mériter une étude particulière, et il ne lui manque peut-être qu'une langue plus répandue pour obtenir en Europe une réputation égale à celle des meilleurs humoristes anglais. Observateur fin jusqu'à la minutie, habile à surprendre le ridicule, hardi à l'exposer, mais enclin à l'outrer jusqu'à la bouffonnerie, M. Gogol est avant tout un satirique plein de verve. Il est impitoyable contre les sots et les méchants, mais il n'a qu'une arme à sa disposition: c'est l'ironie; trop acérée quelquefois contre le ridicule, elle semble par contre bien émoussée contre le crime, et c'est au crime qu'il s'attache trop souvent. Son comique est toujours un peu près de la farce, et sa gaieté n'est guère communicative. Si parfois il fait rire son lecteur, il lui laisse cependant au fond de l'âme un sentiment d'amertume et d'indignation: c'est que ses satires n'ont pas vengé la société, elles n'ont fait que la mettre en colère...
