Esta obra, fiel a las convenciones formales del género épico, está dividida en quince libros. Más de doscientas mutaciones entre las que podemos hallar relatos memorables, como los de Narciso, Eco o Apolo y Dafne, que han servido a lo largo de los siglos como materia para innumerables refacciones por parte de las artes y las ciencias, y que constituyen un fundamento indeleble para el imaginario occidental. Las Metamorfosis constituyen una obra de madurez en la que Ovidio manifiesta toda la experiencia acumulada en su incesante innovación, modificación y actualización de sus modelos literarios en los géneros cultivados hasta entonces. Se llegó a considerar como la Biblia secular de la Edad Media.
Las Metamorfosis de Ovidio es el mejor resumen de mitología grecorromana que nos ha llegado por haber sidoescrito por el mejor escritor de la mejor época de la literatura latina, cuando ya la obra de Virgilio y Horacio eraapreciada por todo el mundo. La obra se despliega cronológicamente desde los orígenes del mundo hasta la propia épocadel poeta, pasando de los tiempos míticos a un tiempo plenamente histórico. El tema que le da nombre al libro, metamorfosis, sirve para centrar en torno a él más de doscientas historias de cambios de forma, entre las que seencuentran algunos de los mitos más famosos de la cultura occidental: Apolo y Dafne, Júpiter y Europa, Eco y Narciso, Diana y Acteón, Píramo y Tisbe, Jacinto, Pigmalión, etc. Los libros VI-X, que ahora presentamos, son especialmentedestacables por sus historias eróticas, narrando celos retorcidos y amores prohibidos de heroínas que desafían lasconvenciones y pronuncian elocuentes monólogos dramáticos donde se debaten entre el deseo y la razón. Medea, Escila, Biblis, Mirra, son retratadas con rasgos indelelebles.
