The importance of the Neotropics to the world's climate, biogeochemical cycling and biodiversity cannot be questioned. Those gradients are either spatial, temporal or spatio-temporal, where many temporal and spatio-temporal gradients are initiated by disturbances (e.g., tree-fall, landslide, cultivation).
