Analog Science Fiction and Fact is an American science fiction magazine. As of 2015, it is the longest running continuously published magazine of that genre, the June 2015 issue being number 1,000. Initially published in 1930 in the United States as Astounding Stories as a pulp magazine, it has undergone several name changes, primarily to Astounding Science-Fiction in 1938, and Analog Science Fact & Fiction in 1960. In November 1992, its logo changed to use the term "Fiction and Fact" rather than "Fact & Fiction". It is in the library of the International Space Station. Spanning three incarnations since 1930, this is perhaps the most influential magazine in the history of the genre. It remains a fixture of the genre today. As Astounding Science-Fiction, a new direction for both the magazine and the genre under editor John W. Campbell was established. His editorship influenced the careers of Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein, and also introduced the Dianetics theories of L. Ron Hubbard in May 1950. Analog frequently publishes new authors, including then-newcomers such as Orson Scott Card and Joe Haldeman in the 1970s, Barry B. Longyear, Harry Turtledove, Timothy Zahn, Greg Bear, and Joseph H. Delaney in the 1980s, and Paul Levinson, Michael A. Burstein, and Rajnar Vajra in the 1990s. One of the major publications of what fans and historians call the Golden Age of Science Fiction and afterward, it has published much-reprinted work by such major SF authors as E. E. Smith, Theodore Sturgeon, Harlan Ellison, Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, A. E. van Vogt, Lester del Rey, H. P. Lovecraft and many others.

Introducing- ASTOUNDING STORIES What are "astounding" stories? Well, if you lived in Europe in 1490, and someone told you the earth was round and moved around the sun-that would have been an "astounding" story. Or if you lived in 1840, and were told that someday men a thousand miles apart would be able to talk to each other through a little wire-or without any wire at all-that would have been another. Or if, in 1900, they predicted ocean-crossing airplanes and submarines, world-girdling Zeppelins, sixty-story buildings, radio, metal that can be made to resist gravity and float in the air-these would have been other "astounding" stories. To-day, time has gone by, and all these things are commonplace. That is the only real difference between the astounding and the commonplace-Time. To-morrow, more astounding things are going to happen. Your children-or their children-are going to take a trip to the moon. They will be able to render themselves invisible-a problem that has already been partly solved. They will be able to disintegrate their bodies in New York and reintegrate them in China-and in a matter of seconds. Astounding? Indeed, yes. Impossible? Well-television would have been impossible, almost unthinkable, ten years ago. Now you will see the kind of magazine that it is our pleasure to offer you beginning with this, the first number of ASTOUNDING STORIES. It is a magazine whose stories will anticipate the super-scientific achievements of To-morrow-whose stories will not only be strictly accurate in their science but will be vividly, dramatically and thrillingly told. Already we have secured stories by some of the finest writers of fantasy in the world-men such as Ray Cummings, Murray Leinster, Captain S. P. Meek, Harl Vincent, R. F. Starzl and Victor Rousseau. So-order your next month's copy of ASTOUNDING STORIES in advance!-The Editor.

Is the entire universe just one of the atoms of some even greater cosmos? Such was the conception of one scientist - and his effort to prove this theory was to take a party of Americans on an expdition to a place that was literally Beyond the Stars. Racing through the vast depths of space in a vehicle larger than the universe itself - a fantastic concept, and one that only the mind of a master pioneering science fiction talent could conceive and then translate into a classic tale of exciting trans-cosmic exploration that will thrill the most jaded imagination. When a girl who said she had been kidnapped from the year 1777 appeared in modern New York, she was either deluded or the victim of an incredible time-spanning plot. And when it turned out the strange man with a mechanical servant who had kidnapped her had been seen in other centuries, it became clear that a super-scientific plot was afoot that must reach far into the unknown cities of the future. The Exile Of Time is a novel of adventure and wonder such as only the hand of a classic master of science-fiction could have written.

Armchair fiction presents extra large paperback editions of the best in classic science fiction novels. "The Exile of Time" was written by the legendary science fiction writer, Ray Cummings. She had come from a different time. She had screamed for help from behind a foggy pane of glass. George Rankin and Larry Gregory, being typical chivalrous men from 1935, threw a brick through the window and rescued the young damsel. She was a beautiful woman with an incredible story. She said she was a kidnap victim from the year 1777! But was she simply insane, or was she truly the victim of an amazing time-spanning scheme. Then, from somewhere out of Time came a swarm of Robots that inflicted on New York City the awful vengeance of a diabolical cripple named Tugh. It was clear that an insidious plot was afoot that reached into the present day, as well as the unknown cities of the far-off future. THE EXILE OF TIME is a tremendous tale of scientific wonders and nail-biting excitement, written by one of the true masters of 20th Century science fiction, Ray Cummings.

There were nine major planets in the Solar System, and it was within their boundaries that man first set up interplanetary commerce and began trading with the ancient Martian civilization. And then they discovered a tenth planet - a maverick! This tenth world, if it had an orbit, had a strange one, for it was heading inwards from interstellar space, heading close to the Earth-Mars spaceways, upsetting astronautic calculations and raising turmoil on the two inhabited worlds. But even so none suspected then just how much trouble this new world would make. For it was WANDL THE INVADER and it was no barren planetoid. It was a manned world, manned by minds and monsters and traveling into our system with a purpose beyond that of astronomical accident!

Armchair Fiction presents extra large editions of classic science fiction double novels. The first novel "Outpost Infinity" is a terrific tale by Raymond F. Jones. The Tantalus Express was a top-of-the-line passenger ship, carrying her travelers incredible distances amounting to thousands of light years. But tonight she was overdue-late by a meager six minutes. Yet those back on Earth knew that even being a few seconds late spelled disaster for the 2500 passengers and crew. They knew the Express was lost somewhere in an unknown realm that even the most brilliant scientists could only conceive of in abstract theoretical terms. And now, adrift in the terrible grayness beyond the universe, the passengers and crew of the Express waited hopelessly for death...while Carl Mayhew, the only man who could aid them, plunged ever deeper into the multiplying coils of outer darkness-where every road leads away from safe, normal Earth, toward-Outpost Infinity! The second novel is "The White Invaders" by master science fiction writer, Ray Cummings. It was an invasion from another dimension. When a young boy told Don Livingston that he'd seen what he thought was a ghost, Don could only chuckle at the young man, to whom he gave assurances that ghosts were far from real. However, to prove the boy wrong, and perhaps even out of a strangely compelling sense of curiosity, Livingston and one of his pals checked out the distant hill where the boy had seen his apparition. The boy had described it as "a ghost that had floated toward him and passed through a rock." Livingston, with shotgun in hand, soon discovered he wasn't dealing with a ghost. Nor was it a wild animal. Much to his amazement Don Livingston discovered that he was facing the very real threat of an invasion from another realm-the fourth dimension. They came to be known as "the White Invaders," and every human on Earth was faced with extermination if they weren't stopped.

Through clever use of genetic engineering, brainwashing and recreational sex and drugs all its members are happy consumers. Bernard Marx seems alone harbouring an ill-defined longing to break free. A visit to one of the few remaining Savage Reservations where the old, imperfect life still continues, may be the cure for his distress... Armchair fiction presents extra large paperback editions of the best in classic science fiction novels. "Brigands of the Moon" is by one of the founding fathers of modern science fiction, Ray Cummings. It's a tale about two planets clashing over Lunar treasure. Gregg Haljan was well aware that there was a certain amount of risk in having the enormous spaceship Planetara touch down on the moon to pick up Grantline's special cargo of moon ore. For that decidedly rare metal-which was invaluable in keeping Earth's technology running-was the target of many greedy eyes. And those who desired it would certainly stop at nothing in order to obtain it. But Haljan couldn't have figured on the devilishly special twist the clever Martian brigands would soon employ. So when he found both the Planetara and himself suddenly in Martian hands, he knew that there was only one way in which he could hope to save that precious cargo and his own secret-and that would be by turning space-pirate himself and paying the "Brigands of the Moon" back in their own interplanetary coin.

One of Cummings' best works, The Shadow Girl remains thoroughly readable and enjoyable even though it was first published more than eighty years ago.

In a tale of the year 2430 A.D. - a time somewhat farther beyond our present-day era than we are beyond Columbus' discovery of America. My desire has been to create for you the impression that you have suddenly been plunged forward into that time - to give you the feeling Columbus might have had could he have read a novel of our present-day life. To this end I have conceived myself a writer of that future time, addressing his contemporary public. You are to imagine yourself reading a present day translation of my original text - a translation so free that a thousand little colloquialisms will have crept into it that could not possibly have their counterparts in the year 2430.

The story of "Tarrano the Conqueror" takes place in the year 2430 AD, which is about as far away from our time as Columbus' discovery of America was. It was my intention to give you the idea that you had suddenly been transported back in time, simulating the sensation Columbus may have had had he read a book on modern living. In order to do this, the author has imagined himself as a writer from that period in the future who is writing to his current audience. Imagine that you are reading a modern translation of his original manuscript, one that is so loose that it contains a thousand tiny colloquialisms that would not have any contemporary equivalents in the year 2430. You will occasionally see small footnotes with explanations that are separate from the text. Imagine that the translator placed them there. The story isn't meant to be extraordinary or full of avant-garde concepts. In that sense, the story itself is simply meant to be a love story filled with excitement and passion; it was created for that audience rather than for you.
