"Death of a Hero", published in 1929 was the author's literary response to the war. He went on to publish several works of fiction. In 1942, having moved to the United States, he began to write biographies. This last work was very controversial, as it was highly critical of the man still regarded as a war hero.

This book explores the personal and professional lives of Richard Aldington and H.D.'s intimate correspondence between 1918 and 1961, including extensive biographical commentary of one of the 20th century's most fascinating literary couples and pioneers of Modernist literature.

Features George Winterbourne, who enlists in the British Expeditionary Army during the Great War and gets sent to France. After a rash of casualties leads to his promotion through the ranks, he grows increasingly cynical about the war and disillusioned by the hypocrisies of British society.
