Pour ce troisième tome, la famille de Jean-Christophe se réduit à lui et à sa mère, suite à la mort de Melchior et au départ de ses deux frères cadets. L'adolescent et sa mère déménagent dans un appartement plus petit. Il continuera à vivre de nouvelles déceptions amoureuses...

Jean-Christophe est un roman de Romain Rolland composé de dix livres. Il a été publié pour la première fois en feuilleton de 1904 à 1912 dans la revue littéraire les Cahiers de la quinzaine, puis aux éditions Ollendorff à partir de 1905.Grâce à cette oeuvre, Romain Rolland fut le deuxième lauréat du prix la Vie heureuse, précurseur du prix Femina, en 1905. Le roman a contribué grandement à l'attribution à Romain Rolland du prix Nobel de littérature en 1915.L'oeuvre retrace la vie de Jean-Christophe Krafft, un musicien allemand de génie, du jour de sa naissance à celui de sa mort. Le héros qui incarne l'espoir d'une humanité réconciliée, notamment en montrant la complémentarité de la France et de l'Allemagne, est aussi un héros romantique comme le Werther de Goethe et l'image de Beethoven y apparaît en filigrane.
