Kaksi nuorta, Pierre ja Luce, kohtaavat ensimmäisen maailmansodan keskellä Pariisissa. Pierre on ujo pasifisti, Luce puolestaan vapaasieluinen taiteilija. Kaiken hämmennyksen ja epävarmuuden keskellä Pierre ja Luce tukeutuvat toisiinsa, mutta pelastaako rakkaus suurvaltasodan myllerryksessä?Romain Rolland (1866-1944) oli ranskalainen kirjailija ja taidehistorioitsija. Rolland tuli tunnetuksi oikeudenmukaisuuden ja pasifismin puolestapuhujana ensimmäisen maailmansodan aikoina. Vuonna 1915 hänelle myönnettiin Nobelin kirjallisuuspalkinto pääteoksestaan Jean-Christophe.

11-vuotias Jean-Christophe tyoskentelee pianistina kaupungin ylimystolle ja opiskelee ahkerasti musiikkia. Poika menettaa laheisen isoisansa ja joutuu elattamaan koko perheen isansa juopotellessa.
