Sam Young, a World War One veteran, takes a job as a coalfield detective, but a massacre during the 1920 labor war in Southern West Virginia causes him to seek other employment. On the way to a new security position with a commercial lumber company in remote Southwest Virginia, he meets Fame Lambert, a recent widow who owns two thousand acres of virgin, or old growth, timber. After riding three hours on a narrow gauge passenger train to a mill town, he meets his new boss, Hoss Zolar, and Bonnie, Hoss's beautiful, unmarried daughter. Sam's life becomes complicated by his love interests and, as security chief, by his conflict with Linc Lambert, a corrupt mountain politician, and his greedy son, Bobbie Joe. The Lamberts operate a house of ill repute and engage in other illegal activities. The cast of characters includes Sam's wartime buddy, Dilman Lester, a wartime sniper turned moonshiner, and Lenore, his young pregnant mountain lass he calls his "old woman." Sam's romances lead to personal growth and choices about love and duty. His detective work leads to the solving of two murders in this fresh, compelling love story in a remote timber region not yet fully into the twentieth century.

Having started my psychiatric journey in 1981 with a diagnoses of schizophrenia, a diagnoses that I gave up in 1991 on the road to a personal recovery. At the age of 59 my wife Karen and my kids noticed that my memory was letting me down. I was leaving gas rings on and would sometimes be found in the kitchen staring into space with no idea why I was there. My ability with numbers has also diminished and my decision making is not as good as it has been. This book is then part of my refusal to give in and to try to stave the passage of time and memory. This is my King Canute time my chance to beat the odds. This is the time to let my own voices both internal and external become even more part of who I am. I hope you find this book entertaining, and challenging my voices certainly do.

As a teenager, Ron Coleman passed up some pretty amazing opportunities, all for reasons even he didn't understand. Upon graduation from high school and with no goals or ideas in mind about his future, he drifted along for a while. It was a very uncertain time. The Vietnam War draft was a looming threat to all able-bodied males of that age group. Eventually, with the draft about to call his number, he felt forced to enlist in the Air Force. Scared to death but much to his surprise, this new life led him on a path he never could have imagined.While reflecting back on his life during preparations for his second and final retirement, Ron realized just how much God had influenced every aspect of his journey. What if he didn't have those surgeries as a toddler? What if he had been allowed to play sports at an earlier age? Why didn't he go to college when it was first offered? All he really knew for sure in those earliest years was that he was forced to go to church far more often than he wanted. What Ron wasn't aware of during all those church attendances was that God's love was quietly and securely being planted in his heart and mind. His faith, he learned later, was what had sustained him and stood out as a very important part of his life.It was only when he took the time to think about everything that had happened in his life that he could see God's fingerprints on it all. Ron's story then gives credit where credit is due and hopefully enables others to know where and how to seek help when needed.1
