This was the first manuscript I had ever written and when I began to compose it in 1986, I intended to just emphasize the injustice to Blacks and the Black racism I experienced in Vietnam. Because I was still dealing with the war within me, I buried this manuscript. But in 1995, I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior. Soon after, I realized that the only reason I am here today is because God was with me, thus I had to share my inward war. This is a story of a naive young Black man from Norfolk Virginia who found himself fighting both an seen and unseen enemy in Vietnam. As one reads his experience, I truly believe that the situations that he encounters will touch the reader in such a way that their very lives will be altered to the point that they will have to share 'The War Within The War' with someone else. It is my sincere desire and belief that whatever war one is still dealing with spiritually or mentally, he or she will find the peace of God that only the Prince of Jesus Christ can give.
Do you remember waking up in the morning as a child and just being excited to be alive? At every moment of day, there was a new opportunity to learn and discover. Childhood was a time when we were excited by simple things like doll babies, marbles, jump ropes, cap guns etc. Now, as 'grown-ups', we're weighed down by our responsibilities and commitments. What's more, now we find interests of our youth irrelevant, childish, or a waste of time. Maybe they are, but the joy and happiness they brought are not. Did you ever have the experience of visiting the old neighborhood? You would run into old friends and reminisce about the past and life back then. Generally, the subject was about the "Good Old Days," and how those were the best of times compared to the times, nowadays. Our childhood memories shaped our lives and made us who we are today, because those childhood values learned as a child stayed with us for life. Childhood was usually the happiest time of our lives. We had no worries then; our only job was to be a "Kid." If only we could relive our childhood just one more time! If only we could re-visit just one 'Childhood day', savoring every memory. If only time would afford us such a sweet act of kindness once again in our lifetime. NORFOLK CHILDHOOD MEMOIRS- YOU HAD TO BE THERE TO TALK ABOUT IT depicts a place in time 'Back in the Day' when our childhood memories were like a clothesline where we pinned photos or keepsakes that were precious. It's a remembrance of priceless times WHEN: It took five minutes for the TV to warm up...Nearly everyone's Mom was at home when the kids got home from school...When a quarter was a decent allowance...You'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny...Your Mom wore nylons that came in two pieces...All your male teachers wore neckties and female teachers had their hair done every day and wore high heels...You got your windshield cleaned, oil checked, and gas pumped, without asking, all for free...You didn't pay for air AND got trading stamps to boot!...Laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box...Teachers threatened to keep kids back a grade if they failed and they did...No one ever asked where the car keys were because they were always in the car, in the ignition and the doors were never locked. We can't be kids forever, but we can re-visit it. It is my prayer that this book rekindles moments beyond description and too extraordinary for mere words because 'You Had to Be There to Talk About It'! So, Let the Good Times Roll!
