"The Accumulation of Capital" is a seminal work by Rosa Luxemburg, a Marxist revolutionary and theorist, originally published in 1913. This book is a significant contribution to Marxist economic theory and political economy, particularly in the context of imperialism and the dynamics of capitalist expansion. Luxemburg's work is notable for its critical engagement with the ideas of other prominent Marxist thinkers of her time, such as Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin. Key themes and concepts explored in "The Accumulation of Capital" include: The Reproduction of Capitalism: Luxemburg delves into the question of how capitalism continuously reproduces itself. She argues that capitalism needs to expand into non-capitalist markets to avoid stagnation and crises. According to her, the capitalist system cannot exist in isolation; it relies on external markets for its continued growth. Imperialism: Luxemburg's work connects imperialism to the expansion of capitalism. She argues that imperialist powers, such as European colonial empires, played a crucial role in absorbing surplus capital and commodities produced by the advanced capitalist nations. This expansion, she contends, was a way to counter the inherent contradictions of capitalism. Trade and Dependency: Luxemburg emphasizes the role of international trade and the dependence of capitalist economies on non-capitalist regions. She argues that capitalist countries exploit non-capitalist regions economically and politically, perpetuating a global system of inequality. Crisis Theory: Luxemburg's analysis of capitalist reproduction leads her to a crisis theory. She suggests that periodic economic crises are inherent to capitalism because, eventually, it runs out of external markets to exploit. These crises, in her view, would ultimately lead to the system's downfall. Political Implications: Luxemburg's work has significant political implications. She believed that it was necessary for the working class to engage in revolutionary struggle and overthrow capitalism, as reforms within the system could not resolve its fundamental contradictions. This aligns with her revolutionary Marxist stance. While Luxemburg's book is highly regarded for its innovative insights into the dynamics of capitalism and imperialism, her ideas have been subject to criticism and debate within the Marxist tradition. Her work remains influential in discussions surrounding political economy, imperialism, and the global capitalist system. Despite its age, "The Accumulation of Capital" remains a cornerstone of Marxist theory and a valuable resource for those interested in understanding the complexities of capitalism and imperialism.

We have thousands of titles available, and we invite you to search for us by name, contact us via our website, or download our most recent catalogues. Academic economists have recently returned from the elaboration of static equilibrium to the classical search for a dynamic model of a developing economy. Rosa Luxemburg, neglected by Marxist and academic economists alike, offers a theory of the dynamic development of capitalism which is of the greatest interest. The book is one of considerable difficulty (apart from the vivid historical chapters), and to those accustomed only to academic analysis the difficulty is rendered well-nigh insurmountable by the Marxist terminology in which it is expressed. The purpose of this preface is to provide a glossary of terms, and to search for the main thread of the argument (leaving the historical illustrations to speak for themselves) and set it out in simpler language. The result is no doubt too simple. The reader must sample for himself the rich confusion in which the central core of analysis is imbedded, and must judge for himself whether the core has been mishandled in the process of digging it out.

The Mass Strike, the Political Party and the Trade Unions was written in 1906 by Polish-born revolutionary Rosa Luxemburg. It brilliantly captures the fundamental lessons from the experience of mass workers'' strikes and their role in the 1905 Russian Revolution. Luxemburg lived in a world in crisis - one characterised by the fast approach of the First World War - and in an era when revolutionary struggles and ideas broke out internationally. Now, over a century later, capitalism is lunging deeper into a crisis of mammoth economic, political, social and ecological proportions. The need for mass strikes that can spill over into revolution is now existential. In this short book, Luxemburg shows how strikes call into question the relationship between the working class and the employing class, how political and economic demands fuse in the course of such strikes, and how they can start to challenge the conservative approach of the trade union leaders. Her book is as relevant as ever in hel

This collection is the first of three volumes of the Complete Works devoted to the central theme of Rosa Luxemburg's life and work-revolution. Spanning the years 1897 to the end of 1905, they contain speeches, articles, and essays on the strikes, protests, and political debates that culminated in the 1905 Russian Revolution-one of the most important social upheavals of modern times. Luxemburg's near-daily articles and reports during 1905 on the ongoing revolution (which comprises the bulk of this volume) shed new light on such issues as the relation of spontaneity and organization, the role of national minorities in social revolution, and the inseparability ofthe struggle for socialism from revolutionary democracy. We become witness to Luxemburg's effort to respond to the impulses, challenges, and ideas arising from a living revolutionary process, which in turn becomes the source of much of her subsequent political theory-such as her writings on the mass strike, her strident internationalism, and her insistence that revolutionary struggle never take its eyes off of the need to transform the human personality. Virtually all of these writings appear in English for the first time (translated from both German and Polish) and many have only recently been identified as having been written by Luxemburg.
