This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Present-Day Ethics In Their Relations To The Spiritual Life is a book written by Rudolf Eucken, a German philosopher and recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. The book explores the relationship between ethics and spirituality in the modern world. Eucken argues that the increasing focus on materialism and individualism has led to a decline in spiritual values and a loss of moral direction. He suggests that a return to spiritual principles is necessary for a meaningful and fulfilling life. The book examines various ethical theories and their relevance to spiritual life, including the importance of self-realization, the role of community, and the need for a sense of purpose. Eucken also discusses the relationship between religion and ethics and the potential for a universal ethical code. Overall, Present-Day Ethics In Their Relations To The Spiritual Life offers a thought-provoking analysis of the challenges facing modern society and the importance of spiritual values in addressing them. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. ""Christianity and the New Idealism: A Study in the Religious Philosophy of Today"" is a book written by Rudolf Eucken. The book explores the intersection between Christianity and the philosophical movement of Idealism, which emphasizes the importance of human consciousness and experience in shaping reality. Eucken argues that Christianity can be seen as a form of Idealism, as it emphasizes the importance of the individual's relationship with God and the spiritual realm. He also explores the ways in which Christianity can be adapted to fit with modern philosophical trends, and how it can provide a meaningful and relevant framework for understanding the world and our place in it. The book is a thoughtful and insightful exploration of the relationship between religion and philosophy, and offers a unique perspective on the role of Christianity in contemporary society. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. THIS book is the outcome of lectures given at Jena on October 23 and 24, 1906, in connection with the Theological Vacation Course. These lectures grappled with certain problems which deal with the sharp oppositions that perplex our life to-day, and therefore seem to call very specially for elucidation. In the course of our inquiry we have sought to show as clearly as possible what these oppositions are, and have done our best to surmount them. The first lecture deals with the grounding of religion in the inner life. Our aim in this lecture is to find some mean between the older thought which favoured the cosmological approach to religion, and the newer which takes the human soul as its starting-point, but is so liable to the defects of vagueness and formlessness. Over against both these methods we proceed to elaborate a system which, while based on the inner life, still preserves a cosmic character. In this way a clear distinction is drawn between a religion of the spiritual life and a religion that is merely humanistic. The subject of the second section is " Religion and History." There is hardly anything so significant for the position of religion to-day as the tendency to refer continually to history. Whatever the advantages of such reference, we must not ignore its dangers. It was incumbent on us to weigh them well, and in particular to ascertain whether it were possible to overcome the evils of a stifling and enervating historicity, whilst still maintaining the significance of history in opposition to a radicalism which is hostile to it. This we could not do without framing certain fundamental convictions as to the meaning of history which shed a new light on the picture of life as a whole, and therefore concern each of us individually.

With the consent of the author the title "Life's Basis and Life's Ideal" has been adopted for this translation of "Die Grundlinien einer neuen Lebensanschauung," with the hope that thereby the purpose of the work will be more directly indicated than by a literal translation of the German title. It is hoped, further, that the title adopted will make an appeal to the general reading public. To make such an appeal is not the desire of every writer on philosophical subjects: but in the present instance it is the case. The author feels that he has a message for the present time, and one that is vital to the true interests of all. It has been remarked, and the present writer would be among the first to acknowledge the truth of the statement, that the voice is that of a prophet in the sense of an ethical teacher, rather than that of a philosopher in the more technical sense. Nevertheless, the use of a philosophical terminology, and the constant implicit reference to the results of philosophical endeavour in the past and present, combined with the peculiarities of the author's own views, make it difficult to understand his message. To non-philosophical readers who are not already acquainted with the more popular works which have been translated under the titles of "Christianity and the New Idealism," "The Life of the Spirit," and "The Meaning and Value of Life," the present work will appear of considerable difficulty. Difficulty in such a work is, however, by no means necessarily an evil, for it may compel more careful reading and thought. The present work is the latest and best general statement, by the author, of his philosophical position. By some reference here to certain ideas, principles, and aims of the philosophy, the attention of the reader may be drawn to those aspects which, in personal contact with the author, one comes to feel are regarded by him as of most importance. It is not invariably so, but in this case to know the man is to gain immensely in the power to understand and appreciate the message. He inspires us with his confidence and enthusiasm, even when we have doubts as to the adequacy of his philosophical creed. His philosophy is, indeed, the outcome of an attitude of life. To know the man is to understand more fully than from all his written works what he means when he speaks of the development of personality and spiritual individuality. Whatever may be the value of what is written about Professor Eucken's position, no substitute can be found for reading his own words in as many of his different expositions as possible.
