The classic Christmas story has entertained people for decades. Every year there are new attempts to retell the saga of a scrooge who loves money and possessions more than anything else but is miraculously given a second chance to know the truth. This new attempt comes with a twist, it takes place in modern times and has a Christian focus.Ben Humbarton hates Christmas, but he feels justified. A tragic accident years earlier on December 24th still haunts him. He is giving a chance to change his future and the future of others he has influence over, but he will have to get past his unbelief. How far will Heaven go to convince him of the truth and will he accept the help?
I enjoyed growing up in the 1980's. What a decade to be a teenager! The 80's had iconic music, classic movies, very big hair and incredibly unique fashion. Another boom in that decade was cable television spreading to the more remote parts of the country, including the southwestern Virginia mountains where I was raised. The people of Appalachia have often been considered at least a step behind the rest of the world, but cable TV enabled us to catch up a little. The coalfields were not as remote as they once were. This book contains 22 stories about growing up in that Appalachian culture during the 80's. Hopefully, the stories will be uplifting and humorous - some will make you laugh and others may make you shed a tear - as we remember those special days. Here is a sample of what you will learn -*What happens when you aim a starter's pistol at the ground (or at someone) and not over your head?*Why are the 7th graders in Wise, Virginia, excited all year?*What happens when you write a critical column about a local town?*What is the lamest pick-up line ever uttered by a 13-year-old? All of those questions answered and more on this journey that takes place in my hometown of Wise. Hope you enjoy the ride.
Christmas is special everywhere, but I think it is even more special in my home area. This book contains 11 stories, 10 of them published for the first time, about Christmas in our rural home. You will meet some interesting characters and learn some distinct Appalachian traditions.Join with me as we travel down memory lane for a great yuletide journey!
While the mountains of southwestern Virginia are extremely beautiful and life there has its own pace, many do not realize the richness of the sports community in my mountian home. From fishing in a reclaimed mining pond to a fleeting Little League baseball moment of glory and lots inbetween - you are invited to remember a less hectic time set in the beautiful Appalachian mountains.
