This book also contains a reply to the objections of an anonymous author against Dr. Clarke's scripture doctrine of the trinity, being a commentary upon forty select texts of scripture, to which is added an answer to the remarks of the author of some considerations concerning the trinity, and the ways of managing that controversy. This treatise was written as an answer to Mr. Hobbes, Spinoza, the Author of the Oracles of Reason, and other deniers of natural and revealed religion. It contains sixteen sermons, preached in the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, in the years 1704 and 1705 at the lecture founded by the honorable Robert Boyle, in which is inserted a discourse concerning the connection of the prophecies in the Old Testament and the application of them to Christ. There is also an answer to a seventh letter concerning the argument a priori in proof of the being of God. This volume presents Clarke's controversial and influential work together with some important supplementary texts, and with a historical introduction which examines Clarke's views and relates them to the Newtonian circle of which he was the most gifted and influential representative.
