Wooden puppet children seek the help of detectives, Dorothy, blind Scarecrow, and his seeing eye dog, Toto, in finding their missing parents that were carved into self-lighting Greek god candlesticks. Their travels take them from Italy to the belly of the Whale Inn in New Bedford, England where an uproarious confrontation takes place with pirates of the Caribean. After Dorothy and Toto returned to Kansas, Tin Woodman was left in charge of the Winkies in the castle of the Wicked Witch of the West after she was dissolved. One day, in the woods, Tin Wooden comes across a tree and hears voices in it. The voices explain they are a family by name of Cottonwood. Realizing the voices are parents and three children, a girl, and two boys, Tim Wooden decides to free them from the tree by chopping them into five logs. A cyclone scoops up the logs and carries them to Italy where a sculptor carves the children into wooden puppets and the parents into self-lightening Greek god candlesticks. When the parents go missing, the children seek the help of detectives, Dorothy, blind Scarecrow, and his seeing-eye dog, Toto, in finding their parents. Their travels take them from Italy to the belly of the Whale Inn in New Bedford, England. There they come across Lion and Tin Woodmen. What follows is an uproarious confrontation with pirates of the Caribbean in the belly of the wooden Whale Inn.

A brother and sister, 10 and 13 years old, are recruited by a mysterious man, trapped in a mirror, to travel back in time to the year 1939 and clear him of a crime he did not commit. To do this, they masquerade as adult detectives and roam Los Angeles, questing gangsters, and their molls as they seek to find the true murderer. Jake and his younger sister, Darlene, while temporarily staying in a downtown residence in Los Angeles, come across a skeleton key to a door that strangely no one else in the building can see. Printed on the frosted glass of the door is the name, Archer Wolfe, Private Detective. As they enter, they find two rooms furnished with strange furniture dating back to the 1930s. Exploring further, they discover the ghost of Archer Wolfe trapped in a mirror on the wall. Convicted and executed for a murder he did not commit, the detective has one request for Jake and Darlene and that is to venture through 1930s Los Angeles as private detectives and find the real murderer so he can be exonerated of the crime. However, they must accomplish this within a short amount of time because the ghost of the detective and his world of the 1930s will soon vanish.Mystery of the Man in the Mirror fits as a children's book, a young adult fiction book, and falls into the mystery adult noir genre as well.

Although Toto can articulate his thoughts and observations clearly, it is when he attempts to verbalize them to his companions that he finds himself hampered by his thick canine accent. In other words, he barks. Toto nonetheless offers his advice whenever they find themselves in one perilous mishap after another. For without Toto's courage, foresight, and determination, as far as he is concerned, they could all still be wandering futilely through the Land of Oz. Or worse, slain by any of the evil threats they encounter. When told that the Wizard of Oz never appears in his true form, and presuming that Wizards are mostly likely courageous, brilliant, generous to a fault, and the best companion one could ever wish for, Toto concluded that the Wizard's true form is most certainly a breed of dog. A, perhaps? Having ascertained this knowledge by deduction, Toto was eager to meet snout to snout what he envisioned as the Great Wizard Dog!
