  • - Mexican Independence Struggle, Hidalgo REVOLT 1810 - 1821
    af Scott Stevenson

The Mexican Revolution was a major revolution that comprised several armies' local conflicts rather than a single cohesive war. It eliminated the Federal Force and replaced it with an inventive force, transforming Mexican civilization and governance at the same time. It also resulted in the promulgation of a new constitution that included the revolutionaries' utopian ideas. Political independence was not the goal of the battle for independence. Unlike their northern counterparts, Mexican revolutionaries sought to reshape their civilization. The rebellion's leaders said from the start that if it were only a political event, it would be incomplete, if not pointless. Scott Stevenson gives a well-rounded overview of nineteenth-century Mexico's complicated and turbulent political landscape but pays special emphasis to the early phases of the insurrection under the priests Miguel Hidalgo and José Mara Morelos. Hidalgo vowed to abolish slavery immediately and focus his pleas on the poor, but he also sanctioned looting and terrible acts of brutality. This brutality would eventually cost Hidalgo, Morelos, and the entire country dearly, resulting in the revolution's inability to achieve substantial social and political progress. While Mexico achieved independence from Spain, serious socioeconomic inequities persisted and would fester for another century. Stevenson expertly recounts the important leaders and struggles, compelling us to reevaluate what "independence" meant and means now in Mexico.

In Don't Forget To Smell The . . . Sawdust, Scott Stevenson answers the question, "What do you do when the person you love most comes down with a life threatening illness?" This is a love story between Scott and his wife Susan who retire and move to a small mountain town to live the simple life and to build their dream home. But instead of the simple life, Scott and Susan find themselves on an unexpected journey through hospitals, reconstructive surgery, hardware stores, and forest fires. This is a tale of two people supporting each other through cancer, through the construction of their new home, and through the largest recorded forest fire in the state of California. Scott and Susan share with us their most intimate of fears, their most cherished moments of joy, their tears, their laughter, their anger, and most of all they show us what it takes to support, through thick and thin, the one you love most.

Amanda, an ER nurse, and Mathew, a sculptor, married for ten years, are tired of the big city and ready for the simpler ways of small town living. On a trip through Sedona, Arizona, they stop to check out an abandoned, run down, fifty-year-old house located in a remote, hidden valley that had caught Mathew's imagination while searching for houses online. While exploring the house, Mathew discovers a manuscript in a hidden compartment of a hand carved desk - mysteriously the only piece of furniture in the house. Intrigued by the cover sheet - a picture of a small butterfly with the handwritten words, "1986 - A FEW DAYS BEFORE MY DEATH," Mathew and Amanda settle down on the dusty floor, lean back against the wall, and begin to read. The manuscript tells of the romance between Scott Montgomery - the property's former owner - and Susan Cambell, who first met in 1944 at the age of eight. Mathew and Amanda discover that the manuscript is but the first of several parts hidden throughout Sedona. Clues from the previous installment lead to the next. While purchasing and settling into their Sedona home, Mathew and Amanda work their way through the clues uncovering the mysterious wonders lying just below the beauty of the red rock canyons. With the discovery of each new portion of the story, Mathew and Amanda learn of Scott's and Susan's growing relationship and in the process Amanda and Mathew reaffirm their own love.
