The GCW won't go down without a fight though, and each promotion pushes the other to new heights as veterans and rookies alike learn valuable lessons along the way.

Xada has been dreading his One-Eighteen ceremony when he will be transformed into a Vulture. He's lost all hope and has accepted his fate as a member of the Ebude, but the other prisoners at the library haven't given up on him yet, especially Julieta, who has recently learned she is with child. Unbeknownst to Xada, he is about to lead another daring escape attempt when they come across another town the Vultures have a stranglehold on. The library prisoners are in for a shock when they find out the calendar Ejerin has been making for the past eighteen years is off by a century. Meanwhile, Alexis is vying for Xada's affections, much to Julieta's chagrin, creating a treacherous love triangle between the three.
Xada didn't ask to be born into a life of imprisonment and he certainly didn't ask to become the key to leading the other prisoners back to their lives of freedom, but that's the way his crazy life has gone. His days are spent learning from the former high school history teacher, Ejerin, and every night is spent listening to the other prisoners reminisce about the freedom Xada has never had. Under the rule of the Vultures, Xada has never seen the outside of the Clearfox Library - that is - until his co-prisoner, the lovely Julieta, discovers an escape route and urges Xada to come out of his shell. Together, Xada and Julieta uncover evil rituals performed by the Vultures, including the consumption of human remains, and decide it is up to them to make sure they don't experience such a fate. Just when things are looking bright for the seventeen-year-old, he finds out he has more in common with the Vultures than he ever imagined. Still, the inmates of the library and now those in other holding cells, are looking at him to give them the lives they once cherished back. Will he press on with his commitment or turn to a life of darkness? Only time will tell.
As a self-proclaimed twitcher-- a birdwatching extremist who travels around the country trying to catch a glimpse of as many species of birds as possible-- the author took a year off in 2002 with the goal of seeing 700 birds and thereby breaking the national record for most birds seen in one year. In this amusing memoir, he recounts his quest, including how he spent all of his inheritance from the untimely death of his parents to make his dream a reality. Populated by unusual characters and interesting species of birds, this part confessional- part travelogue for both bird nerds and the general population follows the author as he works out what it means to be normal despite his unusually avid compulsion toward twitching.
