Turen foregår med egen hestevogn, sejlskib over Storebælt, gennem Fyn, Jylland, hertugdømmerne, Hamborg og derfra videre ind i Tyskland. Turen er langsommelig, strabadserende og dramatisk - Napoleonskrigene gør forholdene usikre. Selve færden, landskaberne, opholdsstederne og menneskene undervejs beskrives med akkuratesse, åbent sind og humor.
